Thomas McCurtains GAA Club Notes

July 03, 2018

Huge well done to Kian O'Neill, Fergus O'Sullivan, Jack Lavin, Jamie Moran & Kieran Williams who were on the South London Feile team that won the Division 2 Cup at the weekend. It is great to see our underage players doing so well at such a high level. The future looks bright for the GAA in East London.

Our Camogs hosted a fundraising BBQ in the Black Lion Pub in Plaistow on Saturday. Huge thanks to Tom, Veronica & all the staff at the Black Lion and G & R Butchers. Thanks to all who came along and supported.

Last week our Footballers were unfortunate to lose to Neasden Gaels on Tuesday while the Camogs came up against a very strong Taras team in the Mixed League Semi Final on Wednesday evening. At the weekend, the Hurlers lost out to Fr Murphys on Saturday while the Footballers bounced back to beat Garryowen in Ruislip on Sunday.

Next weekend we are hosting our Annual Family Fun Day. There will be an underage hurling and football blitz in the morning with the U15s playing their Championship Semi Final against St Clarets while our Hurlers and Footballers play Granuaille and St Josephs in the league in the afternoon. It promises to be a great day and the weather is set to be scorching. As always there will be a bar, BBQ and music on the day and of course plenty of craic. First prize in our big raffle draw is a trip for two to New York. Our Camogs are also out in their final Championship group game against Fr Murphys in Greenford on Saturday morning.

Camogie:

The Camogs played Tara in the Mixed League Semi Final on Wednesday evening. There wasn't much between the teams for the first 15 minutes but Tara finished stronger and pulled ahead to lead by 8 at half time. The East London Ladies staged a comeback and points from Lorraine Breen and Christina Scallon closed the gap but two goals from Tara stopped the comeback. The Ladies now look to Fr Murphys as they play their final Championship group game next weekend.

Mens Football:

On Tuesday evening in Goodmayes McCurtains played against Neasden Gaels in their second league game. second half goals from Tom Keane and MarkMcGirr look to have sealed it for the Macs but a harsh sending off with 15 minutes to go gave the momentum back to Neasden and some sharp shooting by London player Conor Doran made sure of the result.

A fantastic performance by the lads on Sunday saw them bounce back from that defeat to Neasden Gaels during the week. They travelled to Ruislip to take on Garryowen and dominated the game from the start. Mark McGirr and Conor Murphy with the goals in the first half but the pick of the scores was when corner back Paudie O'Shea rifled it to the top corner after a barnstorming run the length of the pitch.

Mens Hurling:

Two second half goals for Fr Murphys clinched this division two hurling tie in Goodmayes on Saturday afternoon. McCurtains started the brighter in the sweltering heat and led thanks to the hurl of Mark Russell with an early brace of points including one free. When a half blocked Stephen Cronin shot dropped short, David O'Lone got to it ahead of Michael Burke, the ball ended up in the back of the Murphys net and they looked to be in control. However, Stephen Bardon started to find his range for Fr Murphys and two points added to an earlier Conor Fitzgerald score brought them back into the game before another Russell free and a well worked Jimmy Byrne point gave McCurtains a 1-04 to 0-03 lead after 15 minutes when the referee called for a well needed water break.

The first Murphys goal came not long after this break as Bardon struck a free from 25 meters out and found the back of the net. McCurtains then rattled off the next five scores in a row Russell, Kieran Dowling, Dean Corrigan and Alan Clancy all on target before Russell got his third free of the game. Macs probably should have been further ahead at that stage but a few missed chances and points from Sean Howlin, Bardon (free) and Fitzgerald kept the Murphys in touch at the change in ends, 1-09 to 1-06.

The second half began as a tight affair with both teams trading scores, Russell, Corrigan, Byrne & Eoghan Caldwell each extending the lead for McCurtains before Bardon pegged them back with two frees and a '65. A positional change saw Ken Watchorn move out from corner back to play around the middle of the park and it wasn't long before it produced the goods. A long ball from Watchorn was missed by everyone and ended up in the Macs goal. Not long after, Fitzgerald added the Murphys third to take the lead for the first time in the match, one that they would not give up. The last 15 minutes saw Fr. Murphys outscore the hosts by 6 points to 2. Bardon (2 frees and a '65) and man of the match Watchorn with 3 points each.
