Urney St. Columba's - Club Notes

August 04, 2020

ADULT FOOTBALL (Daoine Fásta)

Urney made the journey to Cookstown today however the game was overshadowed by an injury to Urney midfielder Ruairi Lynch. On behalf of the Club Committee, management, players and everyone associated with Urney St. Columba's, we would like to wish a speedy recovery to Ruairi.

The game itself started at a ferocious pace with Urney finding themselves 2 up in the first minute, thanks to a sweetly struck Johnny Lafferty point after 30 seconds. This was quickly followed up with a Jamie McAleer point from play after some great work by the Urney forward line. Urney struck again a minute later again thanks to Johnny Lafferty before Cookstown quickly opened up their account to leave the score Cookstown 0:01 Urney 0:03 after 3 and a half minutes played. A Johnny Lafferty free in the 4th minute allowed Urney to stretch the lead back to 3 points. The game settled after this but Cookstown registered their 2nd point of the day in the 7th minute, to leave 2 between them. A period of sloppy defending by Urney allowed Cookstown to register two points from free kicks in the 8th and 9th minute, which leveled up the match.

Then in the 12th minute a late tackle to Urney midfielder Ruairi Lynch after he had played the ball, resulted in an awkward landing and a nasty injury to his ankle and a stop in the game. An ambulance was called and following a lengthy break in play the referee decided it was in the best interests to call the game off with the score Cookstown 0:04 - Urney 0:04. Both managers and teams were consulted and the game will be replayed at a later date.

Everyone's best wishes are with Ruairi and we wish him a speedy recovery. Special thanks aswell to Urney's Marty Holland and Marcus Kelly who tended to Ruairi until the ambulance arrived.

The reserves were also in action today. Once again Urney found themselves light in numbers on the bench and with Cookstown using 9, yes nine substitutes at half time. Urney found themselves tiring in the second half and Cookstown were able to pull away at the end. Urney put up a real fight and lead by a point half way through the 2nd half but once the fresh legs of Cookstown got going the boys just fell short. Once again TJ Duffy topped the scoring charts for Urney, with Ronan Lafferty, Stephen Lafferty, James Kelly and Anthony McGonagle all contributing scores. Marty Holland also slotted home a well taken penalty in the 2nd half.

Full Time score...

Cookstown 4:10 - Urney 1:10.
