Retiring ref Gavin recalls favourite game

Offaly referee Brian Gavin

Retiring referee Brian Gavin says the 2013 All-Ireland SHC qualifier epic between Kilkenny and Tipperary was his favourite game to officiate in.

The Offaly whistler, who announced his decision to retire yesterday, took charge of four All-Ireland finals during his career - all of which took place in the space of six years between 2011 and 2016.

However, none of those deciders matched the "savage tension and passion" when the Cats defeated the Premier men at Nowlan Park five summers ago.

"I really enjoyed my time. My favourite game to have refereed would have to be the All Ireland SHC qualifier between Kilkenny and Tipperary in 2013," he is quoted saying by eirSport.

"Both teams were knocked out in their province and met in Nolan Park. There was, quite simply, savage tension and passion.

"And," he added, "seemingly I did a mighty job."
