New Offaly manager Michael Fennelly is adamant that he will take his time in putting together a backroom team in order to ensure that it is a strong group.
In an in depth interview with the Midland Tribune, the former Kilkenny captain admitted that it is imperative he has the right people with him as he ventures into inter-county management for the first time.
Fennelly did state that it was likely someone else from Kilkenny would be part of the backroom team in some capacity.
“It’s in the process, there’s still a lot of people to be finalised,” stressed Fennelly. “Again, it’s a massive commitment but a coach is still going to be putting in the same hours, your selectors are going to be putting in similar hours. Obviously, the final decision is with me basically and I’ve a lot more balls to juggle.
He added: “Obviously we will have to have an Offaly person here who has their finger on the pulse in terms of the knowledge of hurlers. A good few people have reached out as well, people who I met and can trust and stuff in terms of who is playing well in Offaly.
“I probably will bring someone from Kilkenny, because again someone who I trust and someone who I can fall back on and will give me good observations on me in terms of what I am doing well and what I’m not doing well. That’s really important I think, because it is my first year going into management and I will make a lot of mistakes.”
