Purcell honoured to lead O'Moore County

January 23, 2019

Patrick Purcell celebrates a goal for Laois against Meath in the Leinster SHC at Pairc Tailteann.

Laois captain Paddy Purcell admits that leading out the side for the year ahead is a huge honour for him.

Purcell has been named Laois senior hurling captain for 2019 by Eddie Brennan and his selectors as the county prepare for their NHL 1B opener against Galway at Pearse Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to the Leinster Express, Purcell stated that the players were enjoying being part of the set up under the former Kilkenny All-Star.

“It’s a massive honour for me,” said Purcell. “I wouldn’t be known to be a speaker, but it’s a huge honour for me, and my family as well, they are delighted for me and hopefully we can drive on for the year.

“Maybe over the last couple of years that’s something that wasn’t going on, players weren’t enjoying it, but the enjoyment is definitely back with the players and we’re really driving on now.

“Ever since Christmas we have reached a new level, we’re trying to improve every night we go out, trying to set new targets and new standards, and that’s all we can do and we’ll see where it takes us.”
