St Thomas’ captain Conor Cooney admits that they will have to be at their best to challenge Liam Mellows for their Galway SHC crown on Sunday.

The sides meet in the county final this weekend with Liam Mellows looking to defend their title, but they face a St Thomas side bidding to win the title for the second time in three years.

Billed as the battle of the champions, this is an eagerly awaited contest and the county star paid tribute to Mellows.

“They have been fantastic,” said Cooney. “Any team Louis (Mulqueen) has been with, they are always very tactically astute and very aware to plug gaps or whatever it is.

“They have some fantastic hurlers in defence as well. David Collins has been there for years and he has a wily head on him and you won’t get around him too easy.

“Look it, they have lots of guys. Sean Morrissey, Mark Hughes. Loads of guys there. I could name them all, but we have to try and break them down and see what we can get away with and try to nab a few scores. If we can nab a few goals, all the better. All we can do is hope for the best and see what happens.”
