Kildare are up and running in Division Two thanks to a 2-12 to 0-14 victory over Fermanagh at Newbridge.

David Hyland and Daniel Flynn netted in either half for the hosts, who were also indebted to the scoring prowess of Neil Flynn (0-7), while Conall Jones arrowed over eight points for the plucky visitors.

The match was in the balance at the break as the Lilywhites led by 1-5 to 0-7, home captain Hyland, whose afternoon was cut short by injury, rounding James McGrath to deliver the first major in the seventh minute, Eamonn Callaghan having earlier hit the woodwork with an empty net at his mercy.

Points from Flynn, Con Kavanagh and Paul Cribbin as well as a crucial Mark Donnellan save from Darragh McGurn ensured that Jack O’Connor’s charges led at the turnaround. Ryan McMenamin’s determined side moved ahead with 13 minutes left as Ryan Jones (2), Conall Jones and Ultan Kelm registered but former AFL star Flynn delivered the all-important second goal on 58 minutes, Eoin Doyle and the Flynns adding to the winning tally thereafter.

The border county’s woes were compounded when Ryan Jones received his marching orders for a second yellow card offence in added time.
