Report: Fitzgerald the new front runner in Kerry

September 26, 2018

Maurice Fitzgerald.

Maurice Fitzgerald has joined Peter Keane and Jack O’Connor in the race to succeed Eamonn Fitzmaurice as Kerry senior football manager.

The Irish Independent reports that the 1997 ‘Footballer of the Year’ – who was a selector in Fitzmaurice’s backroom team for the last two years – has presented to the four-man committee tasked with finding a replacement.

His management team is understood to include former Mayo coach Donie Buckley and ex-team-mate Stephen Stack.

The Kerry legend guided his home club, St Mary’s Cahersiveen, to All-Ireland Intermediate glory before accepting Fitzmaurice’s invitation to join his set-up.

It is believed that Kingdom chiefs are in a favour of retaining some links with the previous management so that could work in Fitzgerald’s favour.
