Down star Darragh O’Hanlon is set to undergo spinal surgery next week.

The Irish News reports today that the 25-year-old defender’s back injury, which has ruled him out for Kilcoo’s bid for a seventh consecutive Down SFC crown, requires surgery and that surgeons are said to be very confident of him returning to action in 2019.

“He is heading for spinal surgery to get the disc shaved,” said Kilcoo PRO Michael Kane. “He will be heading for the operation in the next 7-10 days and hopefully everything will go well. He will be out of action for the foreseeable future and he will hope to come back stronger than ever when he’s fully mended.

“I know he’s disappointed to miss out on the championship but he remains a very positive voice in the dressing room.”

He added: “The club wish him well in his operation and recovery.”
