Last Sunday was not to be for our women’s intermediate footballers as they came up against a fine St Michael’s team who won the Sligo county title for 2019 with a 2-16 to 1-11. While there is obvious disappointment with the final result for the girls, the young up-and-coming team performed admirably to reach the county decider. The club congratulates Mike Healy, his assistants and the players for all their effort and commitment of the past year. The team topped their championship group en route to the final - and there is more than enough evident to suggest that this group of players can become a real force at club level in the not-to-distant future.

 

The next generation of girls footballers have a big game too. Our girls under 14 footballers play Eoghan Rua (away) this Monday evening. Best of luck to all involved.

 

Referees don’t often get too many compliments - but we want to pass one on to our clubman Des Henry who officiated last Saturday’s Sligo women’s senior football final between St Nathy’s and Geevagh in Collooney with distinction. David Gough would have been proud!

 

Our senior men’s footballers completed their group stage of the championship with a one-point loss to Coolera/Strandhill at Scarden last Sunday (0-13 to 1-9). The result means we now face defending champions Tourlestrane in the quarter-finals in a couple of weeks time. 

 

A special mention this week for our former clubman Hughie Cannon Jnr who has managed the St Vincent’s Toronto GAA team in Canada to the Toronto championship final for 2019. Unfortunately Hughie’s team lost out to Durham in the final late on Sunday night but it was a commendable achievement to guide Vinnie’s to the Canadian championship decider. 

 

Well done to all our club hurlers who were involved with the Sligo under 15s Hibernia Cup success in Monaghan last weekend. Sligo beat Fermanagh in the semi-final and Donegal in the final.  The Benbulben Gaels players were: Eoin Kerrigan,Thomas Davis, Paul O'Brien, Mathew Percy, Donnacha O'Brien and Daniel Tiernan.

 

Also on Saturday, Sligo’s under 13 development hurlers won the Connacht Plate at the  centre of excellence in Bekan, with Patrick Donlon and Shane McDonagh playing their part on the team.

 

Our boys minor footballers play Tourlestrane in the championship this Friday evening in Oxfield at 6:30pm.

 

The girls minor footballers are scheduled to play Shamrock Gaels in the shield championship semi-final this Thursday evening at half-past-six.

 

The boys under 16 footballers play St Mary’s next Monday evening (Sept16th) in the county ‘A’ championship semi-final at Kent Park at 6:30pm.
