Connacht MFC round-up: Galway safely through to final

June 29, 2018

Leitrim U17s pulled off a late victory over Sligo at Markievicz Park

Galway and Leitrim enjoyed battling wins tonight in Round Four of the Connacht minor football championship.

The Tribe were in superb form as they recorded a 0-15 to 1-9 victory over Mayo at Tuam Stadium, maintaining their 100% record whilst consigning their neighbours to a second defeat and all but knocking them out of the competition.

The hosts slotted six of the first ten points, including three from Matthew Cooley and great scores from wing backs Ryan Monahan and Cathal Sweeney, but Jack Mahon's stunning goal to the top corner had the visitors in front, 1-4 to 0-6, with Martin Ball and Enda Hession points preceding Mahon's 20th-minute major.

However, the winners - bidding for their fourth successive provincial minor crown - led by two at the interval, 0-11 to 1-6, and went on to claim both points, with Liam Judge and Sweeney registering upon the restart and Tony Gill coming up from centre back to land a crucial point. Daniel Cox scored three points for the winners. Donal O'Fathartha's lads are now assured of a place in the July 13th provincial final.

At Markievicz Park, Leitrim netted twice in the second half to see off the Yeats County in a high-scoring bottom-of-the-table encounter, 2-14 to 0-13.

Tonight's winning teams will clash in Round Five next Friday, while Sligo travel to face Roscommon as the round-robin phase concludes. A draw for the Rossies (or even a narrow defeat...) would be enough to secure a date with Galway in the decider. Mayo have played all four of their games and have little hope of progressing.
