Dramatic Roscommon SFC match required three referees

September 09, 2018

Three referees were required in the Roscommon SFC clash between Clann na nGael and Western Gaels.

We've often heard of two referees being involved in a GAA match, but three is certainly a rarity.

Last night's Roscommon SFC clash between Clann na nGael and Western Gaels in Frenchpark was dramatic to say the least, with Clann coming from seven points down to win by 0-15 to 2-8 thanks to two late Matt Scally points, county star Ultan Harney receiving his marching orders during 11 minutes of injury-time and three referees seeing action.

The game was just nine minutes old when the appointed referee Patrick McTiernan picked up an injury and had to be replaced by the linesman. He was replaced at half-time by Paul Daly, who become the third referee of the evening and saw the game to its conclusion.
