A senior football club in Offaly has had to come out and make a statement that they would be fielding in a SFC match this weekend, amid rumours that they wouldn’t.

Gracefield are due to play Edenderry in Geashil, but the Midland Tribune reports that rumours circulated in the county during the week that the former would hand a walkover to their opponents.

The reason believed is that if Gracefield gave the walkover, they might still be in the championship, if Cappincur lost to Shamrocks, with a play-off needed between the sides.

However, Gracefield chairman Pat Keegan rubbished the claims that they would not field, although he admitted to the Tribune that they would be missing a number of players for the game.

“I don’t know where the rumours started,” said Keegan. “As far as I am concerned this will not happen. I spoke to our management team about it and they said they would not be part of anything like that.

“If we have to put out our minor team, we will have a team on the field and that is the way it is. We will have some sort of team on the field.”
