Twenty-one years after winning their fourth and last All-Ireland SHC title, Offaly are now, incredibly, threatened by relegation to the Christy Ring Cup after suffering back-to-back defeats in the Joe McDonagh Cup.
The Faithful County's slide into hurling's abyss continues with today's 13-point hammering by neighbours Westmeath highlighting how far they've fallen.
As hurling everywhere appears to be on the rise, it's a shame to see how Offaly hurling has fallen. Heavily beaten by Westmeath today and as good as out of the Joe McDonagh already. The county has produced great hurlers - what's gone wrong? @DuignanMichael

Well done to Westmeath but very sad to see Offaly Hurling like this.

The greatest story in the history of the GAA is Offaly's previous AI successes

Great win for @westmeath_gaa hurlers today but sad to see the slide in Offaly hurling.

I'll leave Offaly aside here as they are underprepared and out of their depth.

Westmeath are everything you want from your team. Hurling intelligently, first to the ball, winnig in the air, controlling the play, superb support lines. And should be about 8 points further ahead!
I started this summer wondering if I might end up watching Offaly hurling in the Christy Ring Cup in Athleague in 2020. Now it's looking as if Roscommon will pass them out on the way up. This is painful.

TweetFT. Westmeath 3-18 Offaly 0-13. Offaly as good as out of the Joe McDonagh cup the third week in May. Incredibly disappointing, the lowest result possibly in our history. Take nothing from Westmeath who were excellent. Fitter, sharper, better execution. @MidlandsSport
