Offaly manager John Maughan came in for some criticism at the recent county board meeting.

The Kilclonfert GAA club allege that Maughan refused to release their player Cathal Mangan for their recently played Division 4 Football League final, which they lost to Rhode.

At the February meeting of the county board, Kilclonfert delegate Brendan Spillane told the attendees that Mangan was told not to play in the final or he would not be considered for selection in Offaly’s NFL clash that weekend.

The Midland Tribune reports that Spillane said: “It was a very awkward position for the player to be put in and it was not fair to him or the other players. He was told he would not be picked if he played.”

County board chairman Tommy Byrne replied: “Cathal Mangan can’t be stopped from playing. I will deal with this issue with the manager on Thursday night. If the championship is going ahead, we will have to look at the fixtures with clubs of county players but he will be available.”
