The late Mick Hannon honoured

July 18, 2019

The decision to name the trophy for the new under seventeen hurling league after the late Mick Hannon of Clones has been greeted with great enthusiasm and is regarded as giving recognition to his services to the game in the County in various capacities.

To describe Mick Hannon as an avowed hurling enthusiast would not be overstating things in any way and he had been involved at all levels with both club and County as an underage coach and team mentor. He played a big part in promoting the Joe McDonagh inspired Sceim Iomana Dha Mhile, which effectually brought coaching to a new level in the County and Mick Hannon played his part in Monaghan capitalising on that scheme to bring unprecedented success, provincially and nationally to the County at under sixteen, minor and under twenty-one level.

As well as his involvement as a coach and team mentor Mick also served in various capacities at County level on an Coiste Iomana as well as being involved as a selector/team mentor with various County teams, in fact at one stage managing the senior County team when we were in between managers.

However it was his total belief that the future of the game was totally dependent on working at underage level that Mick is best remembered and this acknowledgement of that dedication is richly deserved.
