Monaghan v Mayo: Elvery’s McHale Park, Castlebar: Sunday March 24th @ 2.00pm.
While there are a host of possible permutations and combinations in the Allianz Football league division 1 going into the final round of fixtures, the results of which may have people reaching for their calculators or even an abacus to figure things out, but the only fact concerning Monaghan is that they need to go to Castlebar and win the match, to secure their place in division 1 for another season. Mayo too have seen their position and possibilities change and not just from the start of the competition, but even during last Saturday’s round of fixtures because from looking like heading into a relegation dogfight they are now within striking distance of a place in the division 1 final. Malachy O’Rourke is under no illusion as to the task facing his side, in Castlebar on Sunday.
“It’s a big ask going to Castlebar and looking to win the game, but essentially that is what we have to do, because that’s the simplest solution to the situation we find ourselves in. If we go on and win the game our destiny is in our own hands and I think if we win the game we will stay in division one, but as I said that won’t be easy because Mayo are in good form at the moment but we just have to bring our best performance to it and see if that’s enough”.
