ELECTRIC IRELAND ULSTER MINOR (U17) FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Monaghan v Derry: Athletic Grounds, Armagh: Friday July 13th @ 8.00pm

Ulster minor football championship titles are a rare enough occurrence in Monaghan with the County having won out in Ulster on just 4 occasions, the last of which occurred back in 2013. Monaghan were defeated in the final in 2012 with that victory the following year, 2013, being the 1st title to come the way of Monaghan from 1945.

Derry on the other hand have been much more successful as they have won the provincial title on 14 occasions, the last one being just last year, 2017 when they defeated Cavan by 1-22 to 2-12, and this year they are appearing in their 4th Ulster minor football championship final in as many years. Even that one statistic alone underlines the challenge facing this Monaghan side and Derry's performance in the semi-final when they showed that they just simply had too much class for Tyrone whom the dismissed by 2-10 to 1-8 with what was described in media circles as a superb performance.

MONAGHAN MANAGER Seamus McEnaney knows his side face a huge challenge. "This is a huge game for Monaghan and I know that historically it's important because, as far as I'm concerned, we have only won one minor championship title in 73 years, so there is huge importance there and for me what I want to see is Monaghan in minor finals on a more consistent basis. I think that will happen because of the work that is being put in by the Coaching staff in the County under Paul O'Connor and the work they are doing is top drawer and has played a part in producing all our good players over the last 10 years at least and that work will be paying dividends at minor and under 20 level on an on-going basis."
