Aughnamullen club notes

July 11, 2018

Pride of Place: Pride of place this week goes to the Under 16 Ladies football team who won the Under 16 Div 3 Final on Monday night last against Eire Og.  This was a magnificient win and credit must go to the team and management of Paddy Markey, Bernie Mc Brien, John Sheridan on their win. In the first half Aughnamullen got off to a cracking start with 2 early goals courtesy of Chloe Duffy & Aoibhinn Mc Quillan Eire og got more into the game but the Aughnamullen girls stood firm and although Eire Og scored a goal and a point the blues got points in Ulrika Mc Mahon, Sarah Mc Brien & Katie Sheridan to leave it 2-03 to 1-01 at half time. In the second half Aughnamullen continued to set the pace and had more scores in Ulrika Mc Mahon(2), Chloe Duffy and Nicola Mc Gee to creep more in front and entering the final few minutes had a 5 point winning margin although Eire Og scored a goal in injury time the girls held firm and ran out winners by 2-07 to 2-06 to the ectasy of the players and crowd alike.  This has been a great year for the girls considering Eire Og beat them by 30 points in the earlier league game. It shows what hard work and dedication does. The team performed brilliantly recently starting with Abbie Connolly in goals ably assisted by the Sheridan girls Katie & Grainne in defence with Katie Markey and the Mc Gee sisters Chloe & Nicola outstanding also.  In the mid field Sarah Mc Brien & Shannon Mc Entee worked tiredlessly up and down the field while the forward line of Ulrika Mc Mahon, Aoibheann Mc Quillan, Chloe Duffy, Maria Duffy and Emma Sheridan provided the shooting power. Other girls who were brilliant during the year included Aimee Duffy, Allanah Markey, Aine Mc Quillan & Paula Mc Connell and these girls made telling contributions to the success of this great young team this year. Panel v Eire Og Abbie Connolly, Katie Sheridan(0-1), Katie Markey, Grainne Sheridan, Chloe Mc Gee, Nicola Mc Gee(0-1), Sarah Mc Brien(0-1), Shannon Mc Entee, Ulrika Mc Mahon(0-3), Aoibheann Mc Quillan(1-0), Chloe Duffy(1-01), Maria Duffy, Emma Sheridan, Aimee Duffy, Alannah Markey, Paula Mc Connell, Aine Mc Quillan. Under 15: The Under 15 team produced a brilliant performance when they had an excellent 6 point victory over near neighbours Drumhowan on Thursday night. From start to finish they performed like tigers and it shows with a bit of hard work anything is possible.  In the first half Drumhowan went into an early 2 point lead however after a good attack the ball was stuck to the Drumhowan net courtesy of a Ben Mc Cabe strike however Drumhowan scored a goal and a point to go 1-03 to 1-00 up but back came our lads with scores by Oisin Traynor, Barry Duffy(2) and Conor Boyle to go 1 up but another Drumhowan goal left us trailing again by 2 but a great move up the field resulting in a Barry Duffy goal again came back Drumhowan with 2 points to leave Drumhowan 2-05 to 2-04 in front but another Barry Duffy goal left it 3-04 to 2-05 at the break.  Into the second half.  Drumhowan scored the first 2 of the second half to leave it level however we replied with a Conaill Savage point and  a great long ball into full forward Conor Boyle and he stuck it to net to leave it 4-05 to 2-07. Drumhowan scored the next 3 to leave just 1 between the sides. Again the boys upped the ante with 2 fine scores by Simon Geoghegan to regain the initative and this was enhanced with 2 quick goals by Ben Mc Cabe & Conor Boyle to leave us in control at 6-07 to 2-13 with minutes remaining and 2 further points from Barry Duffy and Ben Mc Cabe victorious on a score line of 6-09 to 2-15. Next game is a league game away to Inniskeen on Thursday night(tonight) at 7.30pm. Seniors: The Seniors played away to Blackhill last Friday night and came away with an crucial away win on a score line of 2-12 to 1-12. This was a game which could have went either way. In the first half Aughnamullen opened the scoring from Kevin Sheridan which was cancelled out by Blackhill with a point of their own. A free from Edmond Mc Ardle put the boys back in front again but again came back the emeralds to leave the sides level 0-2 each after 10 minutes. For the next 5 minutes Blackhill seized the initative with a point and a goal to go into a 4 point lead but the boys came back with 4 points from Michael Bannigan(2), Kevin Sheridan & Colin Clerkin to again leave the scores at parity 1-03 to 0-06 after 20 minutes. In this tipsy turvy first half Blackhill scored the next 3 to go 1-06 to 0-06 in front but in the final 5 minutes Aughnamullen went into overdrive and scored 1-02 with out reply the goal coming from Colin Clerkin to leave the half time score 1-08 to 1-06 in favour of the Sarsfields. In the second half Blackhill went into the ascendancy scored 3 of the next 4 scores with our score from another Edmond Mc Ardle free to leave the scores once again level 1-09 each after 10 minutes of the second half and this trend continued right throughout the second half and entering the final 5 minutes it was still level at 1-11 each with our scores coming from Sean Sheridan & Colin Clerkin. With time almost up Blackhill yet again went into the lead from a Dermot Daly free and it looked like it was a home victory on the cards when Aughnamullen received a free 45m from goal Pete Dooney lofted the free into the danger area which was fisted across the goal line by Edmond Mc Ardle and up popped Lee Conlan  to punch the ball over the line a great combination by 2 veterans of the team and another point by Christopher Keenan ensured a 3 point victory. Next game is on Friday 20th July at home to Doohamlet .
