The Ratoath squad that took on Rathmolyon in the opening round of the MHL

Rathmolyon 3-4 Ratoath 8-23

Ratoath kickstarted their spring league campaign with a high-scoring win away to Rathmolyon.

It was far from one-way traffic early on as the home side battled hard but some cracking goals from Darragh Cunningham, Jack Lanigan, Cian Smyth and Shaun Donnelly turned the tide, even facing into a stiff wind. Ciaran Rogers, James Duffy and James McCann were rock-solid in the half-back line with Conor Wardick, captain Sean Murphy and Will Lanigan mopping up anything in the full-back line.

The second half was characterised by some great team play, Alex O’Kane and Brian Moore linking things well with Jack Lanigan and Shaun Donnelly picking off top quality scores. Callum Browne bagged a brace of goals and Scott Cadwell and Donnacha O Longaigh got in on the act and while the result was never in doubt, Rathmolyon kept fighting and found the net three times themselves. A good result before Ratoath take on Killyon-Longwood in round two at home this Saturday, throw-in 12 noon.

Ratoath scorers: Jack Lanigan 3-10 (4fs), Shaun Donnelly 1-7, Callum Browne 2-0, C Smyth 1-2, Darragh Cunningham 1-1, James McCann 0-1, Scott Cadwell 0-1, Donnacha O Longaigh 0-1
