Minor hurling championship preview

September 21, 2018

The race for the MHC Cup is down to four teams

A big weekend for minor hurling with four Division 1 semi finals and the Division 2 final. All games on Sunday September 23rd at 10:00 unless stated with extra-time if necessary in all games.

Division 1 Semi-Finals

Killyon/Longwood v Ratoath.

Venue: Longwood, Referee: Gus Martyn

Killyon/Longwood have been most impressive on their run to the semi-finals, winning all 3 group games and having a score difference of +50. Ratoath on the other hand carved out good wins against Drumree/Kilmessan and Kildalkey before seeing their comeback against Trim just fall short. Both teams have an abundance of talent coming through but it's Killyon/Longwood who receive a hesitant vote of confidence to qualify for the MHC Final, possibly after extra-time.

Trim v Boardsmill/Rathmolyon.

Venue: Trim, Referee: Sean Gahan

Trim have continued their impressive form on from winning the League earlier in the year as they've come through the group stages with a 100% record. Boardsmill/Rathmolyon have plenty of attacking talent but if they're to come away from Trim on Sunday with the win they'll need to have tightened up at the back. Neil Cole is the Trim Minor and Senior manager, and if the Seniors win their semi-final on Saturday then he looks like having a busy day on October 7th as it's hard to look past Trim in this game.

Division 1 Shield Semi-Finals

Clann na nGael v Drumree/Kilmessan.

Venue: Athboy, Referee: Stephen Masterson

League finalists back in April, Clann na nGael were many peoples fancy for outright honours in the Championship. Much though can change between Spring and early Autumn and they now find themselves in the Shield semi-finals. No doubt they'll be smarting with this and they're likely to advance to the final on October 6th.

Kildalkey v Kiltale.

Venue: Kildalkey. Referee: Patrick Melia

Kiltale have found the going challenging in Division 1 after winning the Division 2 League but will travel to Kildalkey with confidence. Both sides have a number of talented youngsters in their ranks who are capable of lighting up any game. A draw isn't out of the question and it might just take a replay to separate them after 80 minutes.

Division 2 Final

Donaghmore/Ashbourne v Dunderry.

Venue Dunshaughlin. Referee: Henri Clifford. (11:00)

This is the third meeting of these sides this year between League and Championship with both sides having recorded a win apiece to date. On aggregate, Dunderry lead by six points.  With little to choose between the sides, a gripping encounter is expected in Dunshaughlin on Sunday morning. Donaghmore/Ashbourne lost out to Kiltale in the League Final and will be eager to make amends while Dunderry have been in scintillating form in the Championship to date. In a game that could be a thriller, Dunderry, for whom Lee Walsh is expected to be a key performer at centre back can just edge Donaghmore/Ashbourne unless Darragh O'Sullivan can conjure up some magic and wreak havoc in attack. A hesitant vote is given to Dunderry to lift the PJ Stenson Cup.
