O'Mahony backs duo to take Mayo reins

James Horan and Mike Solan celebrates with Paul Lambert.

Former Galway manager and Mayo native John O’Mahony has backed two county men to form the management team to take the Westerners forward.

The search for a new Mayo senior football manager has taken its fair share of headlines since the news that Stephen Rochford had stepped down, broke a couple of weeks ago.

And O’Mahony has waded into the debate about who should be the new manager by backing former manager James Horan and coach Mike Solan.

O’Mahony told the Western People that Horan and Solan would be the ideal combination to take Mayo football forward after a poor campaign this year, stating that Horan was the ‘obvious choice’ as manager.

“Whoever takes over the helm, the introduction of fresh young talent will be a key priority,” stated O’Mahony. “The likes of Eoin O’Donoghue, Matthew Ruane, Brian Reape and Seamus Cunniffe need to get a sustained taste of senior football in next year’s Division 1 campaign.

“Solan with his in-depth knowledge of these young players, should have a role to play in that.”
