IFC: DYI preserve status after play-off win over Barrs

Young Irelands preserved their Intermediate Championship status after coming through a play-off against Nh Fionnbarra at Haggardstown on Saturday evening.
The Dundalk side who enjoyed a memorable 12 months in which they won the Louth and Leinster Junior titles, were in danger of returning to that grade but after a tense battle just edged home.
It was a disappointing outcome for the Barrs who battled throughout the game but in the end just came up short and as a result will return to the junior ranks after four years at Intermediate level.
The Ballygassan side made an impressive opening and build up an early 0-4 to 0-1 lead. By the time the half time whistle sounded they were leading by 0-6 to 0-4 with the points coming from Hugh Osborne, Darren McConnon, Padraig Butterly, Adam Hanratty and William Woods (2).
The Dundalk men made a better start to the second half and a goal from Dean Maguire had them in a strong position and with about ten minutes to go were leading 1-10 to 0-7.
However, the Barrs weren’t finished and a goal from Padraig Butterly gave them hope. Chris McGlynn added a point but the Ballygassan men were unable to complete the comeback.
Derek Maguire, Cian O Naraigh, Jordan O’Donoghue and Peter McStravick all contributed important points on the night for Young Irelands.
