FL1 round-up: Gers continue to set the pace

April 15, 2019

Geraldines continue to set the pace in Division 1 as they made it three wins from three with a 4-14 to 0-8 win over Clan na Gael in Dundalk on Sunday afternoon.

The Clans were quick off the mark through Billy Smith but the Gers went on to dominate the game and a goal from Dara Hamill had them six clear. The Clans rallied with three late points from Smith to cut the gap to 1-6 to 0-6 at half time.

However, the comeback failed to materialise as an early goal from Feidlim Joyce put the game visitors firmly in command and they added further goals from Jim McEneaney and Glen Trainer to record a comfortable win.

The Dreadnots are also very much in the hunt as they continued their good run of form with a 0-9 to 0-7 win over Nh Mairtin at Monasterboice on Sunday afternoon.

The Clogherhead men had the better of the first half and with Liam Shevlin, Peter Kirwan, Nathan Sutherland and James Califf on target, they went in at half time with a 0-6 to 0-3 advantage.

Scores proved scare in the second half but the Dreadnots did just enough to hold out for the win thanks to points from Darragh Shelvin, Califf and Pepe Smith.

St Patricks made it back-to-back wins when they edged home against Sean O’Mahonys in Lordship on a scoreline of 0-10 to 0-9.

Jack Murphy was the hero for the hosts as he struck two late points to see off the challenge of a Dundalk side who will consider themselves unlucky not to have taken anything from the game.

After a cagey start, the Pats opened up a lead of three points thanks to Danny O’Connor, Gavin Gregory and Cathal Grogan. However, the O’Mahonys hit back through Stephen Kilcoyne and Benny Traynor to level the game at five points apiece.

There was little to choose between the teams in the second period but Murphy’s late strike proved enough to give the Pats the win.

St Marys came out on top in a high-scoring encounter at Ardee when they defeated O Raghallaighs by 3-20 to 2-14.

The home side found the net through Ronan Carroll, Daire McConnon and Eimhin Keenan in a game that saw them leading by 1-6 to 0-6 at half time.

The O Raghallaighs found the net in the second half through Danny Morgan but it wasn’t enough to deny an impressive St Marys.

The Blues had the better of the first half but the Brides responded just before the break with a goal from Enda Murphy to cut the gap to two points.

Robert Carr and Emmet Carolan helped open up a gap for the Blues but Sean Marry, Devin and Sean Brennan got the Knockbridge side back into contention. Ciaran Downey looked to have won it for the visitors in the final minute but Devin held his nerve to land an injury-time equaliser.
