FL2 round-up: Late, late Doherty show helps Joes collect second win

St Josephs collected their second win of their Division 2 League campaign when a late, late show from Craig Doherty helped them to a 3-8 to 1-9 win on Friday night.

Daire Smyth found the net for the Joes after just three minutes but Tadhg McEneaney replied to level the game soon after. It remained tight for the remainder of the half and the teams went in level at 1-3 apiece.

A Killian Staunton goal put the Joes 2-5 to 1-4 ahead after 35 minutes but Kilkerley struck back to take the lead in the final quarter. Alan Quigley then got the Joes back on terms before Doherty’s injury-time goal gave his team victory.

St Fechins recorded back-to-back wins when they came from behind to defeat Dundalk Gaels by 1-12 to 0-14 on Friday night.

Eanna McArdle, Gary Shevlin and Derek Crilly pointed to help the Dundalk side lead by 0-7 to 0-5 at half time.

There were further points from Errol Boyle after the break but St Fechins raised their game and scored the only goal of the game to secure the win.

Young Irelands continued their good form as seven points from Dean Maguire helped them score a 0-13 to 0-10 win away to St Mochtas.

The Louth Village side were leading by 0-8 to 0-4 at the break with Declan Byrne and Gerry Garland leading the way in terms of scoring.

The second half belonged to the Dundalk side as they came from behind to win.

Others to find the target along with Maguire were Cian O’Donoghue, Jordan O’Donoghue and Peter Nixon.

Glen Mathews scored five points as Hunterstown Rovers defeated Oliver Plunketts by 0-14 to 0-10 at Mell on Sunday afternoon.

The winners were 0-10 to 0-4 ahead at the break and although the Plunketts battled to get back into the game, it was Rovers who deservedly came out on top. Others to find the target for Rovers were Ryan Burns, Ryan Ward, Tony McKenna and Brendan Lennon.

O’Connells made it two wins from two played with a comprehensive 3-12 to 0-7 victory over Glyde in Tallanstown on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors raced into a four-point lead with scores from Robert Quigley, Cian Doyle and a brace of frees from Niall Conlon before Quigley scored the first goal of the game to send his team in with a 1-7 to 0-4 lead at the break.

Barry Brennan got the home team on the scoreboard with a point, but Quigley pointed to keep four between the sides.

The teams shared the next two points with both from frees before Glyde got the next two scores both well taken frees from Brian Duffy.

Quigley added the second after the break while Cian Doyle added the third late on after five players had been dismissed following a 51 st minute melee.

St Kevins recorded an impressive 2-8 to 1-7 win over Nh Fionnbarra at a newly renovated Philipstown pitch on Sunday afternoon.

The Barrs led by 0-5 to 0-3 at the break with the Kevins scoring through Cian Callan, Dylan Maher and Patrick Clarke.

Goals from Seanie Crosbie and Cian Callan turned the game in the Kevins favour after the break and thee went on to win by four points despite Padraic Murphy finding the net for the Barrs.
