FL1 round-up: Mairtins come away from Point Road with 10-point victory

April 08, 2019

Nh Mairtin recorded their second win of the Division 1 campaign when they defeated Sean O’Mahonys by 1-16 to 0-9 at the Point Road on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors defeated St Patricks in mid-week and built on that victory with another strong performance that had them leading by 0-9 to 0-6 at half time.

Sam Mulroy scored the only goal of the game to put the result beyond doubt while there were also also points from Stephen Campbell, Conor Whelan and John Clutterbuck. Ben McLaughlin top-scored for the O’Mahonys with four points, while Stephen Kilcoyne kicked three.

St Patricks bounced back from their opening round defeat to Nh Mairtin by striking late to claim a 0-11 to 0-9 victory at home to Clan na Gael.

The Clans, who defeated Newtown Blues in mid-week, got off to a great start with points from Robbie Curran and Billy Smith as they went on to lead by 0-4 to 0-3 at half time with Cathal Grogan, Gavin Gregor and Danny O’Connor replying for the Pats.

The Pats went 0-8 to 0-5 in front before the Clans hit back to level at nine points apiece but injury-time points from Gavin Gregory and Evan White saw the Pats come out on top.

O Raghallaighs also left if late in their game at home to St Brides where three points in the closing moments secured a 0-13 to 0-10 win.

The Brides played with the advantage of the wind in the first half and with Sean Brennan and Sean Marry on target, they went in at the break leading by 0-8 to 0-4.

The Drogheda side gradually whittled down the lead and with full time fast approaching two converted frees from Flanagan and Olan Walshe made things all square.

Into added time, the hosts took the lead for the first time since the 18th minute when Ben Rogan split the posts. St. Brides fell apart after this and two more scores from the boots of Rogan and Flanagan ensured the victory for O Raghallaighs.

Geraldines inflicted a second defeat on county champions, Newtown Blues, when they came away from Drogheda with a 3-13 to 1-13 win.

James Craven scored the opening goal of the game for the Gers and although this was cancelled out by Daire Nally, the visitors finished the half strongly and a goal from Jim McEneaney helped them lead by 2-7 to 1-7 at the break.

The Haggardstown side always had the edge on the scoreboard in the second half but were pushed all the way by the Blues. It wasn’t until Stephen Reidy scored the third goal late on and Dara Hamill had brought his tally to seven points that they could be sure of the win.

Dreadnots continued their good run of form when they came out on top at home to Cooley Kickhams on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-8.

Cooley started the game well and were level at four points apiece early in the second but points from Nathan Sutherland, Jay Hughes and James Califf helped them lead by 0-8 to 0-5 at the break. Fearghal Malone and Michael Rafferty helped keep Kickhams in touch.

The Clogherhead men them moved clear at the start of the second half as Liam Shevlin scored the only goal of the game, while further points from Sutherland and Califf sealed a deserved victory.

St Marys turned in an impressive display as they defeated Mattock Rangers by 3-16 to 1-11 at Collon on Sunday.

There was nothing between the teams in the first half and a gaol from Daire Englishby helped Mattock go in at the break level at 1-6 apiece.

However, the Marys dominated the second period and despite Cathal Fleming hitting eight points for Mattock, the visitors went on to win by 11 points.
