FL2 round-up: Doyle hits hat-trick to help O'Connells off to winning start

April 08, 2019

O’Connells got their Division 2 League campaign off to a winning start with a 3-11 to 0-7 victory over St. Josephs at a very wet Cluskey Park on Friday night with Cian Doyle scoring all three goals for the winners.

Doyle got the first two inside 12 minutes as his side went on to lead by 2-5 to 0-2 at the break. Niall Conlon, Robert Quigley and Jason Carroll pointed for the O’Connells while Killian Staunton and Craig Doherty were on target for the Joes.

The second half saw the Bellingham side remain very much in control and Doyle completed his hat-trick on 40 minutes to put the game beyond doubt.

St Mochtas recovered from the disappointment of defeat in the Paddy Sheelan Cup Final as Declan Byrne inspired them to a 2-19 to 0-8 win over St Kevins at Louth Village.

The Louth player finished the game with 1-12 to his name but it was Jamie Farrell who got the first goal of the game to see his side lead by 1-12 to 0-2 at the break.

Patrick Clarke worked hard to keep the Kevins in touch as he kicked six points, but the Mochtas were just too strong and completed the win when Byrne fired in the second goal.

Three first half goals set St Fechins up for an impressive 3-14 to 1-14 win away to Kilkerley Emmets.

Paul Matthews, Brian Devlin and Eoghan Duffy all found the net in the opening period as their side took a 3-10 to 1-6 lead into the half time break as Tadgh McEneaney scored the Kilkerley goal.

The scores dried up in the second half with Ronan Holcroft (3) and Devlin on target for the winners and it was enough to see them hold out comfortably despite Shane Lennon, Daniel McKeown and Rian Hand hitting back for the Emmets.

Mark Savage fired home a penalty with ten minutes to play to hand Young Irelands a 1-10 to 0-10 win over Oliver Plunketts in Dundalk.

The visitors had the better of the first half and points from Sean Callaghan, Conor Early and Ricky Bateson helped them take control on the scoreboard. However, the Young Irelands kept in touch through Jordan O’Donoghue, Peter McStravick and Derek Maguire to reduce the deficit to just 0-9 to 0-7 at the break.

Dean Maguire pointed twice in the third quarter to help the home side edge ahead before Savage found the net to settle the issue.

Nh Fionnbarra scored their first win over Dundalk Gaels since 2006 when they came out on top by 3-7 to 1-11 at The Ramparts.

The Barrs were in excellent form in the first half and goals from Jack Butterly, Padraic Murphy and William Woods had them leading by 3-4 to 0-5 at half time.

The visitors never looked likely to let that advantage slip despite the Gaels pulling a goal back through Mark Hanna as late scores from Woods and Conor Osborne sealed the win.

Meanwhile, Glen Mathews struck a late point to secure a draw against Glyde Rangers in a game played in Ardee.

The Tallanstown men were on top in the first half and goals from Niall Sharkey and Ciaran Sheridan saw them go in at the break with a 2-4 to 0-5 lead.

Points from Ryan Burns, Paul Carrie and Brendan Lennon helped Hunterstown get back on terms before Trevor O’Brien edged Glyde ahead once again. However, Mathews had the final say as he landed the equaliser in the closing stages.
