NEWTOWN BLUES 1-18

ST JOSEPHS 0-9

Newtown Blues remain on course to defend their Senior Championship title after they eased to victory over St Josephs in the quarter-final at Dunleer on Saturday evening.

The Drogheda men were hot favourites to advance to the last four and they certainly didn’t disappoint as they turned in another impressive display to comfortably see off the challenge of the Joes.

It was the Cluskey Park side who were first off the mark through an Alan McKenna free, but that was really as good as it for his team as the Blues quickly took control of proceedings. They were on top in all sectors and their superior movement and eye for a score meant the result was beyond doubt from very early on.

After the initial setback, the Blues clicked into gear and kicked the next eight points without reply as Robert Carr, Ciaran Downey and Andy McDonnell were among those to hit the target.

McKenna and David Kieran replied for the Joes but just before the break the Blues found the goal they had been threatening when Conor Branigan found the net to help his team lead by 1-12 to 0-4.

A Joes comeback was never on the cards and as a result the second half was a rather tame affair with Craig Doherty, Thomas Smyth and Conall Smyth on target for their side.

The Drogheda men took the opportunity to introduce a number of subs and saw Hugh McGinn and Jamie Kelly add to their tally as they ran out comfortable winners.
