SFC relegation play-off: Gers send Kilkerley back down

September 17, 2018

GERALDINES 3-7

KILKERLEY EMMETS 0-6

Geraldines followed up their league play-off victory over Kilkerley Emmets by defeating the same opposition at Darver on Friday night to secure their place in the Senior Championship for next season.

When the sides met the previous weekend in the promotion/relegation play-off it was the Gers who prevailed by a narrow margin, but in this encounter the Haggardstown men were the better side throughout and emerged with a deserved victory that sends Kilkerley back down to the Intermediate ranks.

The Emmets knew they had to improve on their previous outing and the early signs were encouraging as Tadhg McEneaney landed two points in response to a Glen Trainor effort to put his side in front.

However, the advantage didn’t last too long as Gareth Neacy scored the first goal of the game to put his side in front for the first time.

The McGeough Park men then began to turn the screw and added three points and a Conor Rafferty goal to take a firm grip on proceedings. Kilkerley scored the last two points of the half through Shaun McElroy and James Fegan but at the break their side was trailing by 2-4 to 0-4.

Just as in the previous game, the Gers opened the second half scoring with a goal, this time a brilliant effort from the boot of Jim McEneaney. That score was followed by a Josh Arrowsmith point to put their side ten clear and there was no way back for Kilkerley.

The Emmets could only manage two further points from Fegan but Matthew Corcoran and McEneaney replied at the other end to see their side cruise home and finish the season on a high.
