St Francis Dromard GAA Club Notes

U18 A Championship Final: They say you need a bit of luck to win a final, when two of our players clashed heads, the game was stopped, and Longford Slashers won the throw-up and scored the winning point. Our players and management can hold their heads up high, playing the game in a sporting manner, with excellent skill and pace. Congratulations to Longford Slashers and their management team for a fine performance. A special work of thanks to Breffni Arms Hotel, Philomena and Eamon Gray, who sponsored the new set of Jerseys for the amalgamation (which looks excellent) and also for providing food after the game, which as alwas was excellent, and to their Staff for looking after the team. A lot of excellent work has been done with the team during the past few months from Paul Hourican, Paul Treacy, Pauric Murtagh, Thomas O’Neill, and their backroom team of Danny O’Toole, Andy McKeon, Killian Reilly and Naomi Martin.

U16 Championship Final: Best of Luck to St Francis / St Colmcille in the final of the U16 A Championship on Friday Night against a very fancied Killoe OG team.

St Francis / St Colmcille qualify for u16 A Championship final. Our U16 amalgamation team emulated their minor colleagues this week when they had a 1.12 to 1.08 victory over Clonguish in the semi-final on Tuesday evening. This was a very hard-fought victory played out in very trying conditions due to the persistent rain which continued to prevail throughout the game coupled with a tricky cross field wind. Luckily the game was played on as good a surface as could be on the excellent grounds that is Allen Park the home ground of our opponents which despite the weather held up well. Our team took the lead in the opening minutes with a Sean Smith point which was cancelled out by a pointed free for Clonguish and after about 20 minutes of play we led by 2pts following another Sean Smith point and a brace of excellent frees from Matt Duffy. However a misplaced pass in defence led to a very well taken goal for Clonguish from Andrew Flynn but this setback seem to bring out the best in our lads and 3 points in a row from Christopher Conaty, Daniel Conboy and Matt Duffy (f) saw us retake the lead and things got better just before half time when a high ball sent in from Sean Smith saw Padraig Boyle getting a touch into the net for a goal that saw us lead by 4 at halftime. Clonguish opened the second half by narrowing the gap with the first 2 points of the half but Matt Duffy converted yet another difficult free to keep our noses in front. Clonguish however would not yield and played excellent football and the Flynn cousins and Jason Glancy kicked 3 points to a crucial Padraig Boyle point for St Colmcille/Francis. In truth it took a huge effort from our defence marshalled by full back Kenneth Sexton to prevent our talented opponents from scoring a lot more during this purple patch for our hosts but as the conditions worsened Clonguish missed a couple of frees and Kevin Duignan made a good save to keep us in front by the minimum of margins until we got downfield in what at this stage was a rare attack and substitute Arron Smyth arrived at the right time to point and lift the siege so to speak. Daniel Conboy Oisin O’Toole and Darren O’Neil won very important balls in the closing minutes and with many players feeling the effects of a hard game Clonguish conceded 2 frees in their half and Matt Duffy was successful in converting both to stretch the lead to 4 and safety. The match referee Aidan Dowler, who had an excellent game himself and was mindful of the conditions and indeed the safety of all players throughout sounded the fulltime whistle shortly after Matt’s last free much to the relief of visiting team and supporters. This team will now play a strong and fancied Killoe team in the final and this will be our clubs first involvement in such an event since 2000. Scorers; Matt Duffy 0.06 (fs), Padraig Boyle 1.01, Sean Smith 0.02, Daniel Conboy, Christopher Conaty and Aarron Smyth 1 pt each. Team: Kevin Duignan, Ben Creegan, Kenneth Sexton, Conail Palin, Eoghan Williams, Oisin Flynn, Lorcan Reilly, Oisin O’Toole, Darren O’Neil, Padraig Boyle, Daniel Conboy, Gavin O’Hara, Sean Smith, Matt Duffy, Christopher Conaty. Subs used Arron Smyth Ryan O’Connor, John Boyle and James Brady.
