County Senior Football Championship Round 3

The 2019 County Senior Football Championship recommences this Thursday evening when we make the short journey to Newcastlewest to take on Drom/Broadford. With both teams having lost their round 3 games victory is vital on Thursday night if either side is to stand any chance of progression to the quarter finals of the championship. In our two championship games to date we easily saw off the challenge of Na Piarsaigh in the opening round before a heavy defeat to Newcastlewest in round 2. Drom/Broadford for their part have two losses from their opening two games with defeats to Newcastlewest and Oola but will be buoyed by their strong performance last week which saw them overcome Fr. Casey’s in their last group game in the County League. Having played Newcastlewest last week in a pulsating County Senior Football league final where there was no separating the two sides after extra time we will be looking to build on that performance and overcome a Drom side whom we have traditionally struggled with at County Championship level over the past decade. Tomorrow’s game throws in at 7.15 your support is greatly appreciated.

West Junior A Hurling Championship Round 4

St. Kieran’s 3-13

Castletown/Ballyagran 2-15

The junior hurlers picked up their second win of the campaign after a titanic battle with Castletown/Ballyagran in Knockaderry on Saturday evening last. After suffering narrow losses in the previous two rounds to Askeaton and Feenagh/Kilmeedy, a win was needed to keep our qualification hopes alive. Castletown/Ballyagran started the brighter and raced into an early 3 point lead in what were perfect conditions for free flowing hurling. Our boys gradually began to find their rhythm with pointed free’s from Donie Nolan keeping us well in the contest. Our defence also got to grips with the Castletown/Ballyagran attack with Diarmuid Mulcahy and Cillian Enright being particularly impressive. We trailed at half time by two points.

The game really sprung into life in the second half with both teams going hammer and thongs for the win. Our opponents hit a purple patch shortly after half time and raced into a 7 point lead. However, our boys responded admirably and refused to give in. Our revival was led by Mossie Shine, who was outstanding throughout, when he raced onto a ball from midfield and ran at the Castletown/Ballyagran defence before rifling the ball to the net. The introduction of Cillian Ambrose also had a huge bearing on the game. Cillian found the back of the Castletown/Ballyagran defence after catching a long, probing delivery from midfield from Anthony Molyneaux giving us a two point lead going down the final stretch. Our defence held firm in the closing stages of the game to secure the win.

Our lads showed great character and battling qualities to get the win despite being down a few key bodies on the night. We play Kilmallock in the penultimate group game on the weekend of August 11th where only a win will guarantee qualification to the quarter finals.

Panel: John Greaney, Diarmuid Mulcahy, Paudie McCarthy, Cillian Enright, Danny Collum, Brendan McCarthy, Michael Windle, Mossie Shine, Sean McSweeney, Anthony Molyneaux, Johnny McCarthy, John Buckley, Anthony Mullins, Donie Nolan, Eoin McEnery, Mike Flynn, John O’Connor, Ed Fitzgerald, Mike Breen, Padraig Trant, Mike Steele, Cillian Ambrose

County Minor Football Championship Round 3:

St. Kieran’s 0.14

Monaleen 0.07

The minor footballers made it three wins from three on Friday evening last with a hard-earned and character showing win over Monaleen in Coolcappagh. Both sides met at the semi final state of the u16 championship two years ago, on that occasion we just about came away with the spoils and on Friday evening a physically big Monaleen side once again pushed us all the way to the pin of our collars. Fielding a young team with a number of u16’s among the starting 15 due to injury and holiday’s we began the game slow but soon grew into the game with scores coming from John Hayes and Dylan Moloney getting us on the board. One of the most encouraging aspects of the game was when we were reduced to 14 men midway through the second half was our players did drop their heads during a time of adversity but upped their performance, in particular some of our younger players to dig deep and come away with the seven point win and secure a place in the knockout stages of the championship. With three wins from three we travel to Abbeyfeale on Friday August 2 for round 4 in a game between the two sides who met in the County u16 final two years ago. The winner of this game will top the group and advance to the semi final with second and third in the group progressing to the quarter finals.
