West U21 B Hurling Championship:

For the first time in a long number of years, we fielded an u21 hurling team on our own last Saturday in the first round of the West u21 hurling championship. It was played in Mountcollins against Daithi Broudairs who are a Drom/Broadford/Feenagh/Kilmeedy combination team.

On the day we were well beaten but for many of our fellas it was their first game of hurling in quite a while. Daithi Broudairs had a blistering first quarter and were lethal in front of goal. After the first quarter, our boys settled, and we had a goal from Denis Cronin and some nice points from Edward Fitz, Eoin McEnery, Liam Liston and John Buckley before half time.

Again, in the second half our fellas never gave up and we moved the ball well at times. We had a nicely taken goal from Eoin McEnery half way through the second half. Others to play well were Cillian Ambrose, Eamon Ambrose, Diarmuid Mulcahy and Aaron O Connor.

This was an exceptionally young u21 team with over half the team still minors in 2019. The final score line doesn’t do justice to the effort and commitment shown by the 16 players we had available on the day.

Round 2 vs Askeaton

On Saturday last the u21 hurlers made the short journey to Athea for round 2 of the west championship. As always, the pitch in Athea was in great shape for hurling. It was an extremely competitive game with the lead changing hands on numerous occasions during the game.
Askeaton opened the scoring with a point before Eoin McEnery slipped in for a well taken opening goal. There was nothing between the teams during the first half with a superbly taken goal from John Hayes cancelled out an Askeaton goal just on half time with the half time score. St Kieran’s 2.3 Askeaton 1.6.

Scores were less plentiful in the 2nd half. A well taken goal from William Clifford 10 mins from the end had us ahead. However, Askeaton snatched victory in the closing mins with a goal of their own. Final score St Kieran’s 3.5 Askeaton 2.9. This was a terrific game of hurling between 2 well matched sides. It was a pity that we did not hold onto victory, but the nature of this display was fantastic to see from a very young team. We’ve the last round game against Templeglantine this coming Saturday in Tournafulla at 4pm. Hopefully we’ll manage to complete all our fixtures, for the first time in many years, which was the target at the start of the year.  Well done to all the players involved.

Coolcappagh pitch:
Last Sunday saw the arrival on a fantastic pre-fab in the field in Coolcappagh. This was kindly offered to the club by Coolcappagh national school board of management and staff. We had an early morning start to cause the least inconvenience to local traffic. This was a big task to get this moved and great credit to our project team for the job, led by Ger Duggan and Martin Geraghty. The rest of the original village people were also involved, namely Seamus Ambrose and jimmy Duggan. Deirdre was on hand cooking the breakfast for everyone. All in all, it was a very successful operation carried out with almost military precision. Hopefully it will be used as it’s a welcome addition to the pitch in Coolcappagh. Thanks to all involved including Tony and Damon from the CE scheme.

ADRSC AstroTurf:

After months of hard work and preparation the new ADRSC Astroturf facility is up and running and in full use. The facility is providing a wonderful amenity for all sporting organisations within the local community and it is great to see it being availed of in such high demand in recent weeks. Due to the increasing demand for the facility it is vital to make a booking in advance which can be done very easily on the online booking system. As a club it is great to see so many of our teams availing of the facility which will now allow our array of teams to train year-round. In order to book a time slot, go to the ADRSC website.

Championship Draws 2019:

West Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship

St. Kieran’s, Adare, Askeaton, Feenagh/Kilmeedy, Castletown/Ballyagran, Kilmallock

The West Junior A hurling championship has undergone a drastic shape-up for 2019 with the addition of three south limerick teams into the championship as there were not enough south clubs to make a meaningful championship. As a result, there are now twelve participating clubs vying for one of the most sought-after prizes in Limerick GAA. There will be two groups of six with the top four teams advancing to the west quarter finals.

West Senior Football Championship.

The senior footballers will begin their defence of the west championship with an extremely difficult west quarter final tie with Drom/Broadford, interestingly both sides have also been drawn together in the county championship this year. The winner of this contest will advance to the west semi-final where the winner of the game between Newcastlewest and St. Senan’s awaits.

Minor Football:

The minor footballers will once again compete in the premier championship in 2019 and have been drawn in a very competitive group two with defending champions Fr. Casey’s, St. Patrick’s, Ballybrown and Monaleen. They begin their campaign on April 5 when Rhebogue side, St. Patrick’s make the trip to Coolcappagh.

U21 Football:

The u21 footballers make the step up from the West A Championship to the County Premier Championship in 2019 also where they have been drawn in a very tough group with reigning county senior champions Adare, Na. Piarsaigh, Mungret/St. Pauls and Fr. Casey’s. As always it will be October, following completion of the county senior football championship before the u21 championship begins.

GAA National Club Draw 2019:
St. Kieran’s GAA Club is participating in the 2019 GAA National club draw, this is an excellent initiative run by GAA Headquarters in Croke Park whereby clubs receive all proceeds generated from their ticket sales. Tickets are €10 and are currently in distribution and can be purchased from all club officials and players. We would greatly appreciate your support for the draw as all funds raised go directly into the running of the club and are a vital source of income. There is a wide array of prizes on offer ranging from a 2019 Renault Clio 4 Expression to shopping vouchers and All Ireland Senior Hurling and Football final packages.
