McErlain: we were very good on the front foot

Derry’s Allianz FL Division 4 final win over Leitrim was the icing on the cake as far as manager Damian McErlain was concerned.

The Oak Leafers made it eight wins from as many outings in this year’s campaign at the expense of Leitrim in Croke Park and McErlain was delighted with his team’s attacking display.

“Any day you come to Croke Park, it’s always a tough day in terms of what you have to do to win,” he outlined to BBC Sport Northern Ireland.

“We played very hard there for 70 minutes, put a lot of pressure on ourselves with ball we gave away etc. but, scoring 20 points, we were very good on the front foot.

“Very pleased, that’s eight wins out of eight.”

McErlain pinpointed his team's first-half scoring burst as the turning point in the decider.

“When we went three or four down in the first-half, we put ourselves under a lot of pressure. The Leitrim crowd were feeding off the turnovers that we were offering them.

“We actually kicked seven points in-a-row then at that point to go in at half-time three points up.

“That was probably the time when we turned the game, turned the psychology of the game and knew ourselves that if we managed it well enough in the second-half that we could kick on and win it.”
