Kildare awarded six frees in qualifier

(Oldest Posts First)

Has the referee been announced for the Monaghan game? Should the county board object if it is Joe McQuillan?

I think they would be very foolish to object to McQuillen. Having said that his refereeing of the Kildare/Clare match was very poor and in my opinion hugely favoured Clare and it wasn't his fault that it didn't go to extra time. His decision to throw the ball in for Eamonn Callaghan, in his opinion, taking too much time over a free at a very crucial stage of the match was very unfair.

His club is about 10 miles from Monaghan so assume he couldn't get this one anyway.

There's no doubt that there's a bigger thing here about McQuillan and McEneaney which has going on for a few years now. But the only thing we can do is get on with it. If McGeeney showed us anything it's that kicking up a fuss will only make it worse.

Yeah six frees versus 23 for Clare. How many in a scoring position ? Think maybe 1 or 2. Hopefully if we do get him again it will be live on tv where he might get more scrutiny. Thought it was a McGeeney thing until last week! Don't want to mention another name...

maybe joe decided to award us the advantage more often as we had no free takers on the team.

Wasn't there a similar free count against us v Wexford in 2009 ?

Every game in 2009 was like that. We put up massive scores but all from play. We were awarded 1 free from a scorable position into the hill v Dublin and we missed it. We kicked 18 points from play that day which is a record. Had refereeing decisions been given equally (in my opinion) to Dublin we would have won that Leinster. In 2010 we were put out of the championship by Coulter's square ball goal. In 2011 v Donegal David Coldrick overruled his umpire for OConnors square ball that cost is the game. The Dublin game in 2011 was another example with Brogans late free. The list goes on and on.

Correct, remember McGeeney being unhappy about that. You would have to think that one day a major refereeing decision will go in our favour and may be a turning point in our fortunes.

The Tom O'Connor goal v Donegal still really grates with me. Mistakes can be made but not only did Tom do well to stay out of the square, he did even better to make it clear to everyone present that he had stayed out of the square, the way he tiptoed around it. It was an indefensible decision.

Lads most of these past events warrant criticism but I feel you are getting your excuses in already. The vast majority of bad luck , and good luck are dependent on them being avoided and /or exploited. If you are depending on a referee decision then you are not far enough ahead to absorb such events.Ryan doesnt seem to be much of an excuse maker.I hope that doesn't change. You make your own luck and put up with the bad decisions ,if you are a serious contender that is.

Six frees seems like a very low amount when you consider the amount of frees that are given for stupid fouls on the ball, or the amount of times a forward wins a free simply for going down on a ball with a defender chasing behind him.

From behind one of the goals, well the one Clare were shooting into in the second half, it was hard enough to make out clearly what exactly was going on down the far end of the pitch. O'Connor looked to have been brought down a couple of times when running at goal but next thing you know Clare are bringing the ball out of defence.

There was a lot of inconsistency on display anyways, throwing the ball up when we took "too long" to take a free was followed up a few minutes later by allowing Clare run down about a minute and a half before taking their free right at the end of injury time.

I'd said the f*****r was raging they missed it.

I'd be interested in seeing the free count in this game aswell.

Coldrick had a good game to be fair. Got all of the big calls correct.
