Liam MacCarthy winner Reidy played Christy Ring Cup last year

David Reidy makes a clean catch for Kildare against Meath in the Walsh Cup at Pairc Tailteann

In 2017, David Reidy represented Kildare in the Christy Ring Cup; last weekend, he won an All-Ireland SHC with Limerick.

The first man from the Dromin-Athlacca club to pocket an All-Ireland senior hurling medal, Reidy was omitted from the Treaty County panel by new manager John Kiely in 2017 when an interesting invitation was issued by a fellow Limerick man.

Former Limerick goalkeeper Joe Quaid had been in charge of the Kildare hurlers since 2015 and Reidy was working and living in Naas as a school teacher. Quaid asked Reidy to hook up with the Lilywhites and he duly helped his adopted county maintain their Division 2A status and reach the last eight of the Christy Ring Cup.

The Limerick man notched 0-24 in his first two championship outings but missed the quarter-final clash with Carlow through injury and Kildare lost by eleven points at Newbridge in May of last year. The following winter, Reidy was recalled by Kiely to the Limerick senior panel and the rest is history. He was a key part of the All-Ireland winning set-up all season, not least when he came off the bench to fire over a brilliant injury-time point as Cork were beaten after extra time in the semi-final.

It's a story that has a perfect ending as Reidy's former team-mates in Kildare also landed the Christy Ring Cup this year.

Speaking to Kildare Now about his time with the Lilywhites, the All-Ireland winner said:"I didn't know what to expect but I can't speak highly enough of the players and management, Kildare hurling in general and the Christy Ring competition. The effort the boys put in are as good as anywhere else, the professionalism is the same, and I was delighted to see them win the Christy Ring this year. I can't speak highly enough of them."
