Galway's protracted search for a new senior hurling manager is expected to end in the coming days, with Louis Mulqueen, Ciaran Carey and Shane O'Neill all believed to be in the running to replace Micheal Donoghue who resigned in August.

It's understood that the selection committee have carried out interviews this week and that an appointment will be made before next Sunday's county final between reigning champions St Thomas' and Liam Mellows. It will be Mellows' third successive final appearance under the guidance of Clare native Mulqueen, while Limerick legend Carey was an interested spectator at last Sunday's SHC semi-final double-header in Athenry.

Another Limerick man, Shane O'Neill, joined the race this week. Since hanging up his hurl in 2012, the solicitor has enjoyed much success as manager of his club Na Piarsaigh who he led to an All-Ireland SHC title in 2016 as well as three county titles and two Munster club successes. He stepped down from the role in March of last year and is seen by many as the front-runner to land the Galway job.
