Galway captain Damien Comer hit back at critics of Kevin Walsh after Saturday night's championship exit at the hands of arch rivals Mayo.

The Galway manager was in no mood to talk about his future after the 1-13 to 2-13 defeat which has only increased speculation that he will walk away after five years at the helm.

Comer, who made his first appearance of the season as a half-time substitute after undergoing ankle surgery earlier this year, blasted in the Irish Daily Mirror: “I think it’s pretty embarrassing the press that he has got over the last few years.

“If you had seen the way Galway football was when he came in and where it is now, I think it is great credit to the man and I don’t think he is in any ways deserving of the harsh criticism.

“We know as a group the work he has done and we’re very proud of where we have come from and where we are going to go to.”
