Mayo 1-18

Galway 1-17 AET

Mayo dashed Galway's Connacht MFC five-in-a-row hopes in an epic final after extra-time at Tuam Stadium this evening.

Whetting the appetite for tomorrow's All-Ireland SFC qualifier between both counties in Limerick, spectators were treated to a hugely entertaining encounter that saw the sides tied on 0-15 apiece when referee Patrick McTiernan brought normal-time to an end (they were actually also level on 0-9 apiece at half-time in normal-time!).

It was Frank Irwin's 72nd minute penalty that won the match for Mayo after the Ballina Stephenties clubman calmly slotted home in the second-period of extra-time to hand his county their first provincial title since 2014.

Galway led by 1-17 to 0-17 at half-time in extra-time, with Tomo Culhane, who was immense throughout the contest, converting a penalty in the 64th minute that looked to have set Donal Ó Fatharta's side on their way to a historic success.

It was also full-forward Culhane - scorer of 1-9 - who forced extra-time with a superb point deep into injury-time after man-of-the-match Ethan Henry appeared to have snatched victory for Mayo from a '45.

Tomas Morley's charges will now face the losers of tomorrow's Leinster final, while Galway are up against the winners in the same province - both at the All-Ireland quarter-final stage.
