Galway captain David Burke believes that they must use Joe Canning’s loss to drive them on.

Canning sustained a bad groin injury during the NHL semi-final defeat to Waterford and his return date is not yet known, although the Galway camp hope he will be available for some part of the Leinster SHC.

The Tribesmen begin their Leinster SHC campaign with a home cash against Carlow this Sunday. Even without Canning, Galway will be favourites to gain a victory.

And Burke told the Connacht Tribune that Canning’s absence opens the door for someone else to step up to the mark.

“Every day you go out, you want to have Joe playing but, unfortunately, he picked up a knock. Obviously, we would love to have him but we have to look for a positive and it is that this is a great opportunity for other lads to step up to the plate,” said Burke.

“We have serious forwards in the county that can perform on any given day. So, even though we are down Joe, I think it is an exciting time for those coming in.”
