Stop The Madness

(Oldest Posts First)

I dont know how the GAA can stand over the madness that is the Championship Draw any more. Roscommon will have a challenge match against New York or Leitrim and then will have two shots to make the Super 8s, by either winning Connacht final or a qualifier. In contrast the loser of Mayo Galway face 4 back door games. Donegal have to beat Cavan AND Derry just to reach Roscommons starting point. JOKE !!

same with Kerry, have to play Clare / Limerick who lets face it, they will beat and won't have too much of a task and for donegal to get to the same stage the would have to beat Cavan, Derry and Down. Dublin will have a walk in the park vs Offaly or Wicklow and a likely handy game vs Meath / Longford. The fact that Leinster and Munster have seeded championships is a farce aswell think of Ulster and Connacht, 3 games between teams that could well be in the championship in late July / August whereas in Leinster and Munster the best games are between Meath - Longford and the possibility of Dublin v Meath and Cork v Tipp. I also think that having the bigger teams one step forward in the championship will widen the gap even more as they will always still have more left in the tank in August.

Look the whole GAA competition arrangements are utterly chaotic and each attempt to reform to get passed needs a compromise and the compromise makes matters worse. A comatose drunk would devise a better arrangement for competition. I challenge anyone to stand in front of the mirror and describe the championship to yourself and try not to laugh.

Agree with all of the above. The interviews after each of the provincial draws last night were mostly cringe! Sean Cavanagh was refreshingly honest and Paul Flynn avoided saying that it would be tough playing Offaly or Wicklow though obviously he would not have been allowed to say what he truly felt. Ciaran Whelan saying that he would not fancy a championship game in Wicklow or Pat Spillane trying to use faux statistics to say that the Munster championship is competitive were laughable.

All that said, we are stuck with this for three years now.

It's not about fairness its about revenue.

Its power and position.

There should be no seeding in any of the provincial series. The whole competition needs to be open from the start.

Every team should have to play the same number of games (replays aside) to reach a final. I understand the historical provincial format but time to change it. I do believe the Super 8 is a step towards an open draw. The GAA is a slow mover in change so its small steps at a time.

Far from being a "farce", I'd argue the seeding of the Leinster championship is common sense. It separates the provincial semi-finalists from the previous year and helps ensure that those who won preliminary rounds the previous year will not have to play them the following year. In fact, the seeding of Leinster completely supports your argument that teams who do well in previous championships in Ulster / Connacht should not be pitted against one another at an early stage in subsequent championships. On that basis, how on earth do you consider seeding a farce?

It's easy to do within the present system.

Replace the qualifiers with interprovincial ties.

If you're not playing in the Provincial championship that round you play an Interprovincial match instead.

Round 1
So teams play Leinster and Ulster preliminary rounds and the other 24 teams play Interprovincial matches.

Round 2
There are 12 quarterfinals between the Provincial championships, the other 8 teams (Munster and Connacht bye teams and losing Ulster and Leinster preliminary round teams) play Interprovincial.

Round 3
8 semifinals plus 8 interprovincial games

At that stage have 20 teams with the best 3 game records (to include the 8 Provincial finalists) play round 4. 4 Provincial finals plus 6 open draw matches.

Straight knockout rounds from then on featuring top 12 teams.

4 byes but not necessarily the Provincial champions if they've done badly in Interprovincial games.
