Stop the Hand Slap Goal

Just wondering what everyone thinks about the rule which allows a player to slap the ball into the net in Football. I think this is a terrible way to award a goal. It looks crap and requires no skill but the reward is a maximum 3 points.

Ryan McHugh is fond of the oul no skill goal though isn't he, Say you celebrated it when he done it against Meath last week and Dublin in 2014. On the goal as a whole, I don't mind it. The finish may not be fantastic but its usually the end result of some fantastic build up play.

Surely there's skill involved to work the ball into a position to be able to slap her in?

Yes a 12 week ban for any player who does it, plus a ban for the manager who spent so much time perfecting these moves on the training ground.

That's an interesting point you've made - because both of those goals could of been scored by kicking the ball but its quicker to hand slap. Against Meath he had ample time and in 2014, the Dubs defense was still attacking when he buried his second goal :) - so under the current rules, the player made the most efficient choice. And every team is at it....

A few people who aren't Irish have pointed out to me that it looks crap and I agree with them totally.

Not a mention of how many of these 'goals' are square balls like Monaghans on Saturday night. have a good look at it before replying and make sure you know the rule.

Yeah the amount of lads you hear saying "sure there's no square ball anymore" at games is huge.

I love it they all count and change the square ball rule back to the old rule!

I agree, The change to the rule which meant only a closed fist was acceptable in these situations was passed subversively through congress. The palming into the empty net is not reflective of the skill set we need to encourage in the game. Every forward should be able to catch and bring a handpass down to their foot in one movement at pace.

I looked at it a few times and, much as I wanted to find it was a square ball, I thought the Monaghan goal was fair enough. He was outside the small square at the time the handpass was given across the goal. He was in when he touched it by slapping it in but outside when the pass was given. That's fair enough as far as I understand the rule.

At point of handpass I don't think he is actually in the square.

They should change the rules for any part of the game that 'look crap'. Maybe have an artistic merit section for scores. A simple hand slap goal would be just a point. If a player does a cartwheel into the square before he slaps the ball in it's three points. Freekicks are a bit boring, maybe extra points for blindfolded frees? Is it a game of football or a circus that you want to see?

I agree it's a horrible way to score. It's one of my hobby horses; should have to be one-handed, closed-fisted, and must come from a kick-pass, not a handpass. It's Gaelic FOOTball after all.

Maybe keep the slapped goal legal but only if the scorer got the ball from a foot pass.
