Mayo v Derry

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Mayo "should" be able to beat Derry at home. However in true fashion we will probably make hard work of it. Derry football is at a low ebb although we thought the same before the Galway game last year. Hopefully from a Mayo perspective we see the likes of Conor Loftus start up front and see what he can do.

Derry knocked Mayo out in 2007 up in Celtic Park and also recently beat us in a league semi final so I will approach with caution but Mayo really need to be laying down a marker here.

Probably the perfect draw for Mayo. At home to a team that they will beat but who are good enough to give them a decent game for awhile maybe.

That might be giving Derry too much credit though.

In anyways Mayo to come through without too much difficulty.

I'd say Mayo will have too much power and know how for Derry. Mayo took a while to get going properly in the qualifiers last year so maybe Derry can take advantage of that, but you'd have to fancy the men from the West to get the job done.

Derry have some very big men, i would expect them to go route one a lot into that suspect Mayo full back line!!

I wouldn't write Derry off. We saw the scare Fermanagh gave Mayo last year. Derry had a good result against Waterford away - I know its Waterford but they ran Cork close. Also, their defeat to Tyrone has a bit more context after Tyrone's performance yesterday. I like Damian Barton as a manager and there will be a lot of enthusiasm amongst the squad going into that game. Mayo should win of course but if they take their eye off the ball for this one they could find themselves in trouble.

I suspect that our suspect full back line isn't as suspect as your own suspect full back line, Belclare. And ours has the benefit of having performed against the best forward lines, with a number of all star winners to select from.

First of all I wouldn't be surprised if Derry shocked us. They got the quality players to beat anyone but the question is will they start the right team. They need to be careful of who the starting 15 is. But the other question is will they play attacking or defensive football. Derry playing man on man attacking football will scare Mayo. The team that has to be picked to beat
Mayo is as follows:
1.Ben McKennlis
2.Niall Keenan
3.Brendan Rodgers
4.Karl McKaige
5.Ciaran McFaul
6.Chrissy McKaige
7.Danny Heavron
8.Conor McAtamney
9.Mark Lynch
10.Niall Loughlain
11.Ryan Bell
12.James Keilt
13.Danny Tallon
14.Emmet McGuckin
15.Shane McGuigan

Shane McGuigan has not been given a proper chance to show what he is capable of, he would probably be one of the most naturally talented forwards I have laid eyes on in Derry, he is a serious talent that could really damage Mayo's defence. Mayo didn't have such an easy time in the qualifiers last year, so I'm going for a Mayo win here, but I won't be surprised if Derry won.
Doire Abú!!! Good Luck Derry!
Mayo 1+

The ref is going to have to be very clued into Mayo's cynicism in order for Derry to have any chance in this game. Cillian O'Connor was a disgrace against Galway for his shameless conning of the ref to get tom Flynn black carded. Not nice to see and no place for that in our game. The dogs in the street know Mayo are a cynical team and whoever gets the whistle will need to be on the ball. I feel Mayo will come through it but their home form hasnt been great and Derry could stick with them for 50 minutes or so.

Hahahaha and Galway arent a bit cynical..wish supporters would accept all teams are cynical these days with pulling and dragging off the ball and how to con refs to win frees,

Agree all teams have a certain level of cynicism. Some teams are more so than others. Cillian is a master at getting away with little things on the pitch such as stealing 10 yards for a free or influencing refs. I don't mean it as a dig, it's the sign of a seasoned division 1 team in fact. Refs just need to be tuned into it as cillian gets away with a lot.

How has he been brought back after his injury? Do the successive managements see something in him nobody else can?

Caff and Keegan picked up injuries on club duty. Conor O Se is a long term lay off. Add in Higgins is suspended....there may be room for some panel memebers to impress. Derry will be no pushover.

Playing at home will be a boost to Mayo, a trip to Celtic Park or Owenbeg would have been more tricky but at home Mayo should have too much, they do need to let people know they are still about and contenders and that should be all the incentive they need

I have to support the neighbours in Derry on this one, could be tight enough, I'd like to see Derry get back to the team they used to be,challenging for Ulster titles and All Irelands.

Classis "I know you are but what am I?" from Mayo fans again I see.

Galway poster makes a valid point re. Mayo and Derry and gets this in return!

At least in Galway we are aware of our short-commings - maybe too much so at times

That's how I approach most Mayo games if play like they can the 'should' win but Derry could be up for it after getting the win in Waterford. We were on the low burner at the start of the qualifiers last year and we were in a close game with Fermanagh that is now famous for how we won our penalty even if I feel we would have won the match besides. I know Fermanagh fans would have felt if the game had stayed as it was they may have won it. Mayo definitely need to improve a bit for this game or we may enjoy a nice summer free to play club matches and book holidays.

Interesting you say that...was talking to a woman a few days ago who said they have not had a family holiday since 2010.....every summer since has been all geared toward following Mayo who have either been in a semi final or final inc replays. It's been a hectic 6 years of rollar coaster...will we ever reach the top is the question?
