David Clifford has 2 won 2 minor all ireland and 2 hogans cups. Cooper didnt have DC great underage record. Clifford has done the business against ulster sides something which Gooch (people might argue)(never done. He never beat a Ulster team in aI final. Clifford has everything strength, pace, too footed and cool as a cucumber. Will Clifford surpass Gooch cooper to be the greatest footballer of all time? David Clifford to surpass the Gooch? MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13692 - 10/10/2017 12:17:32 2054359 Link 2 |
It's impossible to predict and ridiculous to be touting a very good underage player as potentially the greatest player ever. Even in the Case of a good senior player we can't really judge them against past greats until late in their career. Yes David does have a very bright future but as well as the talent he has he will also need some luck along the way. Cooper will admit that he was very lucky coming into a Kerry team with the likes of Seamus Moynihan, the O Se brothers and other great players. At the minute David Clifford will not have this luxury. imonmyway (Mayo) - Posts: 113 - 10/10/2017 12:22:00 2054362 Link 2 |
Really feel for the lad with the hype around him now nationally, i dont think a minor footballer has ever had this profile before. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4441 - 10/10/2017 12:53:49 2054378 Link 1 |
I remember the same being said about Joe Canning and it took him til 28 to win his first senior all ireland. Foley91 (Meath) - Posts: 418 - 10/10/2017 13:55:29 2054403 Link 0 |
Was Cooper not playing against Donegal in 2014 when Kerry won?

By that logic Cork may as well give up the football cos Gooch absolutely terrorized Cork. Maybe that explains why they are in the state they are already Superglue (Kerry) - Posts: 1283 - 10/10/2017 14:19:54 2054414 Link 1 |

No. He didn't play a single minute of the 2014 campaign, although he does have a medal. He played in an incredible 9 finals, winning 4 of them. If Clifford manages something close to that, I'm sure he'd be delighted. The title of this thread is nonsense. Comparing an excellent minor, to one of the greatest players to have played the game. Some of the best senior players of the last 20 years, weren't the stand-out players on their minor teams. Likewise, many great minor talents didn't have great senior careers. I've no doubt Clifford will make an excellent senior, if he stays, but to set the comparison at this stage as Gooch is ridiculous. Great thread, I think we can all say Clifford is in fact the greatest player of all time as it is. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 7830 - 12/10/2017 15:16:05 2054881 Link 0 |
The hype somewhat softens the blow from the reality-check that they recieved this summer.

It's the rest of the country that's hyping up Clifford, if you look back through all the Clifford threads you'll see that. We know more than most that great minors don't always make it to senior level as we saw with jack ferriter Barry John Walsh and paddy curran and maybe even killian Spillane. No Down here we're just glad David has decided not to go to oz and that he'll stay here and try and make us a better team if he can. F**k me Vishred...if any county has learnt about hype vs reality it is Mayo!

Judging by the threads on here and articles written in the papers by former Kerry players giving out about him possibly going to Australia I'm not so sure if the hype around him is all outside of Kerry.

Of course we want him to stay, he is the best underage prospect we have ever seen, and we had another potential star move to Oz just last year. But it's not Kerry people putting all those daft articles on SportsJoe and the like, building him up to be the savior of the GAA. He can be a big star in the game but he needs time, most Kerry folk that I meet realise that.
