Dublin Vs Monaghan

Replying To Kurt_Angle:  "We lost the last two league games to them - one where the lads were just off the plane and clearly not up to speed, the other via a late, deflected goal in a dead rubber. I honestly can't remember the last time we've lost to Monaghan in league or championship. I wouldn't put any stock in this "Indian sign" stuff."
I wouldn't put any stock in it either but results are results. Jim Gavin didn't send a team out to lose nor did he like it when they did.

Monaghan and Dublin have produced surprising encounters for the most since we have been back in League 1. There was a hammering in 2015 but an excellent contest in a league semi final that same year. In 2016 it was a one point win for the dubs (i remember that game well, the dubs fans actually applauded McManus). In 2017 Monaghan threw it away to lose again by a late goal. 2018 we won by a point (Doubting JG wanted his charges to go to a league final on the back of a defeat as bar Cluxton it was a full team). In 2019, fair enough the dubs were cold and we exploited the mark.

I am hoping we are close as it will give me comfort that we are still at this level. We beat a poor Tyrone but did well against a decent Galway. If we can keep this tight or even get something I will be confident that we can get enough from our remaining games to stay up.

While you're correcting things...A late deflected goal? I remember Jack chipping Comerford alright, but I don't remember anything deflected about it?

That was one point of that post where I was completely lost - was it that goal he was talking about or am I forgetting a different game? Jack's goal was a lovely finish, some argued if he was going for it, but I don't remember a deflection.

Besides that, wasn't there a few more scores after the goal, on either side? The winning score was a lovely long range point from Fintan Kelly in injury time.

Well now, we had the windy privilege of welcoming Ciara to the home of the five in a row on Saturday night as The Dubs and Monaghan played out a thriller, in some pretty mad conditions.

I always like playing Monaghan, pound for pound one of the most passionate fans in the country and in all honesty one of the loudest when ever we play them. I still dont know what a Fanrey is but im sure ill check, one of these years.

The Dubs continued to give youth a decent fling, with a pretty experimental forward line including Mullen, O Brien and Flatman (Although Faltman went out to half back). The Dubs bolstered by some stalwarts in the magic Fenton, Rock, McCarthy, Jonny Small and Kilkenny.

Monaghan looked like they were fielding close to a championship 15, but im sure a more educated eye on Mongahan well correct me there.

To be perfectly frank Mongahan absolutely beasted The Dubs in the first half. Some sublime stuff played not least the goal in the opening five minutes with a ball worthy envy sent in to McManus who saw off a couple of defenders with exuisite movement and got the better Even in goal. It was lovely football, probably the best we've seen in Croker so far this year.

The cobwebs weren't knocked of the Dubs yet, as Mongahan continued to play some lovely stuff bolstered by some tough at teak defending and winning massive amounts of turnover on the young Dublin forwards.

Mongahan roared to a massive 1-9 lead heading into the break and the Dubs looked very lucky to be heading in with three points as every line of ours looked second to everything. In fact Monaghan will be disappointed not to head in by more.

The second half initially didnt improve thing s for the Dubs as Mongahan continued to repel the Dubs up to the last quarter, Dublin laboriously tried to catch up by tacking over the odd score but Mongahan looked home and hosed. 60 mins saw the Dubs try and inject a bit of guile in the forward line and on came Bugler and Basquel and immediately the tied begin to shift, ball was sticking, gaps started appearing and momentum started to swing toward Dublin.

7 points down heading in to 70 mins, somehow the Dubs got a goal, from the hero of many a tight game Macker, after a lovely knock down by Bugler. Our class began to show, as Jamsey, Basquel, Bugler and Rock all contributed to the score line only for Davy Byrne to pull it out of he bag for us to get a point in the last minute. All in all it was a result we didnt deserve but we will absolutley take it and Monaghan will be dissapointed.

Id be guilty of thinking that Monaghan would regress under Banty this year, after their early exit last year, im evaluating that opinion now, if anything they look that bit more expansive then under Malachy, but still tough as teak if you want to go to war. Defense and system was excellent. And some lovely expansive stuff played. McMannus and Beggan just a joy and McAnespie played wonderfully as well, but credit to the whole team.

As for Dublin, we were wonderfully woeful really, this was the type of game i wanted, to bring on some of the young players in experience, mission accomplished. Faltman, Mullen and O Brien will only benefit from that game as will the other youngsters like Even, Murch and Howard. O Brien looks a player in fits and starts in particular.

Aron Byrne came on early enough and made hard work of it, i watched it back yesterday and he did better on second viewing then i thought live. Brilliant to see Collie Basquel back and getting his first mins of the league and he made a telling contribution with scoring and some brilliant inside forward play, hes a player. But the biggest hero on the day for us and one im really excited about in Sean Bugler, this lad is looking like he is going to be a big, big player for Dublin.

I was delighted to see Sean McMahon involved and on the bench. Hes a player ive wanted involved with the Senior squad for two years and i hope to see him get mins in the coming weeks. Disappointed we haven't seen POCB yet, he must be injured, Darren Gavin as well for that matter.

We are playing in fits and starts, maybe targeting two quarters a game to really open up expansively and its been third gear performances in all our games in the league so far as, we develop, try new things and luckily we are scraping results.

All in all you get the feeling that this league is about bringing some lads on by giving oppurtunites now to be part of the panel in the summer, the starting 15 is so established and spaces so limited that unless you are making an impact in the spring it might be curtains.

So all in all im more then happy to continue to experiment, even if it means this boom and bust performances. We are sitting on top of the league unbeaten and Cluxton, Cooper, COS, Jack, MDM, Connolly, Con, Costello haven't seen a minute of football yet, so everything in context.

Next up we welcome Donegal to the home of the five in a row and im sure they will be watching the Mongahan tape back, cant wait.

As always Up the Dubs.

Fair enough summary.

Monaghan still have a bit to do and a few to come back but that team was closer to what I expect in Championship than I imagine the dubs would have.

I am left thinking on one aspect for Dublin and thats Comerford and Cluxton succession planning. I am not sure he is the answer based on what evidence I have see so far. I hope it continues to be the case!

Cheers Gator, hope you enjoyed the game, we were very lucky to come out with anything, on the performance over the 70 mins we didnt deserve a point in my opinion.

I didnt notice McCarron and i thought he had a good game the last day Vs Tyrone or it might have been the Galway game. I didnt see that little speedster who destroyed us in clones last year eatier was it - Garland.......i think.

When the day comes, i dont think anyone can replace Cluxton and its unwise for us to expect it and the level he developed into. Even is doing alright, hes coming on every year and the best compliment i can give him, is we didnt miss Cluxton against Kerry and Mayo this year holitically.

I thought Even was dodgy on kicking the last day but grew into it and the conditions were hisosibel, Beggen was sublime and didnt phase him at all, a total joy. Even made a brilliant save for what should have been a certain a goal. I wouldnt blame him on the goal it was well taken and the ball from McAnasepie and the movement of McManus took out the whole defense - was class. Sometimes you just have to acknowledge supreme skillful play.

Even is blulking up this year i notice and he has needed to, hes still fairly young for a keeper, if im being totally honest and this bodes well hes more developed then Cluxton was at similar age, its easy to forget Cluxton had some very ropey times with Dublin. But we will absolutely be a poorer team and more vulnerable team without Cluxton when the sad day arrives. Dublin will always cough up chances its the way we play, Mongahan showed that brilliantly the other night with quick early ball.

I think Comerford is doing pretty well. He had a couple of loose kicks on Sat in terrible conditions but apart from that I thought his distribution was top class. Could he have done better for the goal, perhaps, but he had the best forward in the country bearing down on him. He made two great stops during the game. I thought our full back line was poor on Sat though, the opposite to how they played in Castlebar. Monaghan were very good, incredible work rate and fittest and most physical of the three sides that we have played.

Re: McCarron, maybe you're thinking of Conor McCarthy there? He had a great game against Tyrone, scoring 0-4 and leading the line when the like of McManus was very quiet. McCarthy mostly had a quiet game himself Saturday night, hopefully he's back on form against Mayo. Not sure about McCarron, thought I heard he'd picked up a knock, but one of my county men might have more info than me on that.

The speedster you're thinking of from last year is actually Stephen O'Hanlon, who unfortunately opted out this year. Hopefully the door is open for him to return as we never really got to see him proper last year, just a couple of exciting glimpses early on like that Dublin game. The other name you're thinking of is David Garland, who was in great form in the Sigerson Cup this year. I think he opted out aswell, presumably because of a lack of gametime last year. I think Malachy perhaps thought he was a bit small but he clearly has potential, possibly another that could be enticed back into the fold at some point - but again we don't really know yet what sort of team Banty will want, though he's changed things up a bit so far.

Your almost certainly on the money patk. Seems a pit on the lads opting out, O Hanlon in particular looked a top prospect, some man for getting in behind and out in front of his man and stretching a defense.

Garland still a possibility from what I hear.

I think I might finally have thawed out from Saturday.

Hard luck to Monaghan, Dublin getting a point was robbery.

The last free taken by the Monaghan Keeper should have been played back to defense (by another player), game over. Error on Banty for not being alert.
