Replying To Furlong1949:  "Joyce is one the greatest forwards of all time. His performance in the 01 is one of the greatest performance by a forward in an All Ireland ever. You will find Meath supporters have great respect and great admiration for Padraig Joyce. Galway deserved to win the final that day, they were much better team and were well deserving All Ireland winners. A great team, the greatest team to come west of the shannon in last 50 years. Michael.Donnellan is one the most exciting talented footballers of last 50 years. But my favourite was Ja Fallon. He made that Galway team. tick, another great player.

I am trying to be fair to Galway, but I dont think people are being fair to Fay. Joyce destroyed one best corner backs in the country at time Mark Reilly. But if we use the above factual evidence.l you posted. It says this.

1 Joyce did not score 10 points on Fay. Joyce scores 5 points on Fay.
2 Joyce did not score double digits on Fay. As everyone always says. This is not reality. That did not happen.
3 Joyce scored 5 points from play. Only 2 of them while marked by Fay.
4 Fay kept Joyce scoreless from play in the first half. 6 points apiece at half time. In Fays words " Everything was grand" in the first half. Keeping one of the greatest forwards scoreless in the first half is not bad.
5 In the first 6 or 7 mins of the second half . Joyce scored 2 points from play.

This is significant Why?
Because incredibly for the first time in his career after 27 games a forward had scored more then one point from play marked by Fay.

This is signifucant why?
It shows the greatness of Joyce , he was the first forward after 27 championship matchs after 6 years to score more then one point of Fay.

This is signifcant why?
Most defenders would keeping one of thw greatest forwards of all time scoreless in the first half and letting that forward score 2 points play in a whole match a good performance. Nearly all defenders marking one of the greatest forwards of time and keeping them to 2 point from play in one game would be seen aa doing a great job marking that player.

This is significant why?
Because Fay did not mark Joyce for the next 20 mins. When Joyce ran riot Reilly was marking him. This is the reality of what happened. When Joyce scored 10 point, 5 of them were on Reilly.

This is Significant why?
Because it means Joyce did niot score 10 points neing marked by Fay.
Because Joyce scoree 5 points in total marked by Fay.
Because Joyce scored 2 points from play marked by Fay in the whole game.

This is signifcanf why?

Because it means when everyone say Joyce scored 10 point marked by Fay, 5 from play. This is untrue.
The truth, the reality was Joyce acored 2 points from play and 3 frees marked by Fay. When people say Joyce scored 10 points on Fay. This is not true. It uncorrect. Its misleading. Its a blatant untruth. A brexiteer of Tump supporter belives in falsehoods and untruth. I like to deal with factual evidence.

This is significant why?

Because for the first time in his career and 6 years and 27 championship matchs in a row a players scores a second point from play on Fay. Fay is unerved. Because for the first time after 27 games 2 All Ireland wins marking all time great players like Peter Cavanan, Maurice Fitzgerald and Fay was marking a forward who scored more then 1 point from play against. For brillant defender this wouldnt be an issue. But for a truly great defender
this was below his exceptional standards.

I have seen players in the modern era play in All Ireland finals and semis final and there opposing players scored 1 - 2 or 1 - 3 from play and the defender was said to have a good game. Kieth Higgins marked James O Donoghue in 2014 semi final. Higgins was praised for having a good game. He did. But he marked Donighur and Donoghue scored 2 - 6. Donoghue scored 4 points from play on Higgins.

Many many times in modern game I have seen defenders let their forward score 2 points from play in a whole game and they are seen as doing a good job.

Keeping one of the greatest forwards of all time Padraig Joyce to 2 points from play and 5 points in total in a whole game would be seen as good job by any brillant defender. But only a truly great defender like Fay would see marking one of greatest players of all.time and letting him score 2 points from play and 3 from.frees as a dreadful performance.

In Summary

Joyce is one of the greatest forward of all. time. His performance in 01 final is one greatest of all time.

But the TRUTH is
1 Joyce did not score 10 points being marked by Fay. For most of the second half Reilly was marking Joyce when he ran riot.
2 Joyce scored 5 points on Fay not 10 points.
3 Joyce scored 2 points from play on Fay not 5 points.
4 Fay kept Joyce scoreless in the first half, Joyce scored 2 points v Fay early in the second half and Reilly took for next 20 mins in second half.
5 I am just trying to set the facts right. People for 18 years have said Padraig Joyce scored 10 points being marked by Darren Fay.

Will ant Galway supporter admit the truth, that Joyce did not score then points marked by Joyce that Joyce scored 2 points ftom play marked by Fay.
Will any Galway supporter afmit the truth that Reilly marked Joyce when he ran riot in the second half.

It takes nothing away from Joyce greatness admitting the truth. The actual truth makes him more great. In that it was not til Fay marked Joyce in Fays 27th game in a row Joyce was the first and only forward to score more then 1 point from play v Fay. It actually how great Joyce was.
B
But all.I stating is the reality that Joyce did not score 10 points v Fay. Fay kept Joyce to 2 points from play in the whole game. Fay did not mark Joyce for 80% of the second half . When Joyce ran riot it was v Reilly.

It takes nothing away from Joyce . It actually makes him look a greater player when you accept the truth. Fay from 1996 to 2007 was the best full back in Ireland. Fay game after game in his first 6 years kept every to not more then 1 point from play
..In his career two players caused him.problems. Think of that 11 years a defender and only 2 forwards really caused him problems. In 2008 his legs were gone and in the qualifiers he struggled v limerick forward. But his legs were gone after 11 of being best full back in Ireland.

2 Players caused problems for Fay in those 11 years. 1996 to 2007.
They were Galway Joyce in 01 and Galways Meehan in 07.
Did they score 2 or 3 goals, did they score 4 or 5 points from play. Yes they caused him problems but they only scored 2 points from play v Fay.

In 01 Fay kept Joyce in championship scoreless in the first half.
In 07 Fay kept Meehan in championship scoreless in the first half.
In 01 Joyce scored 2 points from play marked by Fay in the second half
In 07 Meehan scored 2 points from play by Fay in the second half.

Fay was very upset with these two performances. He took himself of Joyce after he scored 2 points from play. And aftet letting Meehan scored 2 points from play Fay couldnt leave the house.

Imagine been a full back for 11 years and your worst games were when the in two different games 6 years apart. These Two different players scored 2 points from play against and this was a disaster. 11 years an inter county defender footballer and you worst performance our when two players you were marking scored 2 points from play. Is that not extraordinary..Thats why many consider Fay to one of the great full backs.

In 2001 one of the great full backs played one of the great forwards. That full back kept that forward scoreless in the first half. In the first 6 or 7 minutes that forward scored 2 from play. That defender for first time in 27 games had let a forward score more then 1 point fron play he was marking. He was unerved and asked his corner back to mark the forward. The corner back was roasted and 3 points from play and frees were scored v that corner back..For most of he second half when the forward ran riot the full back was not marking him. The forward scored 2 points play on thw full back in totql But afterwards everyone said he scored 5 from play from play and ten in total. This is was unfair and not the truth.

I understand Galway supporters think I am putting down Joyce performane. Im not . It was one of the greatest performance ever in a final. I am.just stating the truth and being fair to Fay.

Will any Galway supporter state the truth and be fair to Fay and agree with below
1 Fay did kept Joyce scoreless from play in the first half. And only marked for 7 or 8 mins of the first mins. Next 20 mins was on Reilly and this is when Joyce ran riot. and Fay took Joyce at the end of the game.
1 Joyce scored 2 points from play on Fay.
2 Joyce did not score 10 points on Fay.
3 And for most of the second half Joyce was being marked by Reilly.
4 When Joyce ran riot scoring 3 points from play ans frees in 20 mins it was v Reilly not Fay.

Thats what happened. I not going to change my mind and cannot change what happenned. It takes nothing away from the greatness of Joyce. He was the first player in 27 championship games and 6 yeaes to score more then 1 point marked by Fay. Joyce was one of the only two forwards to really trouble Fay in 11 years. Both scored 2 points from play v Fay. It actually shows what a great player Joyce. I have no more to say on the matter. I am not going to changing my mind because I cannot change what happened in the past. It happened. It would be just fair really if supporters would recognise Joyce didnt score 10 points on Fay , it was actaully 5 points on Fay and Joyce scored 2 points from play on Fay anf it was on Mark Reilly that Joyce ran riot."
Suppose it's easy to keep a record like that if each time you feel under pressure marking a guy you panic, and throw your corner back under the bus!

Replying To TheUsername:  "I often wonder about the "from play" stat, must be the most irrelevant stat in the game or made by those reaching and working hard to make a point.

Its not like its chalked off the score board or influences a game, free takers and set piece takers are some of the most skillful and revered in in our game, yet their often seems like a purposeful will to dumb down their contribution to the scoreline. They are players that need to be cultivated with huge respect and our probably some of the most unique in the game.

Its like saying yeah Johnny Sexton is good but he get very little from play."
I completely disagree! All I ever hear about free takers (club and county) is typically "he scored 10 points automatic man of the match." Though 8 were from frees and the free taker gets the plaudits from the public... particularly the public that haven't seen the match. Therefore it is very important to highlight the amount of scores that were accumulated from free kicks.
Nobody ever asks "who won the frees?". And "from frees" doesnt make the score insignificant, it just helps readers understand that the player may not be the messi/ronaldo of gaa and give a fairer reflection of what players are scoring.
it is a specialist area of the game and requires good skill, but at the end of the day it's a team game with many skills and positions. Credit and critisism should be taken across the board... lots of these frees are tap overs too which you or me could deal with

Joyce in the majority of his play in the first half was as good as the second only that his shooting boots were left in the dressing room. He created plenty of chances off Fay in the first just didn't take them. That's all that stopped Fay dealing with the dreaded "two point syndrome" a lot earlier.

For me the biggest thing was never what Joyce scored off Fay. It was the fact he sent the one of the best full backs in Ireland running for the shadows rather than go toe to toe with. Head heart and talent Fay was well and truly roasted that day."
Darren Fay retired in 2008. His legs were gone and in his last game limerick forward gave him the run around. But from 1996 to 2007, he was best full back in Ireland. Even in 2007 against great Tyrone team in All Ireland quater final he was man of the match v Owen Mulligan and Stephen O Neill.

For 11 years no one scored 3 points from play in the championship on Fay. Extraordinary defending.

From 1996 to 2001 in 26 championship match No forward scored more then 1 point from play marked by Fay. Extraordinary defending.

It took 6 years after his debut and 26 games in a row before a forward scored more then two points on Fay in the championship. Extraordinary defending.

In 11 years Fay was full back for Meath 1996 to 2007. Only two players, two players caused him problems. Extraordinary defending.

In 11 years from 1996 to 2007 only two players scored more then 1 point v Fay in the championship.
They were
Joyce in 2001 scored 2 points from play on Fay. After Fay kept him scoreless in the first half.
Meehan in 2007 scored 2 points from play on Fay..After Fay kept scoreless in the first half.

Ask Padraig Joyce and he will tell you he scored two points on Fay and Fay kept scoreless in the first half. Ask Padraig Joyce and he will tell you it was Reilly he ran riot. Joyce played with Fay in the international rules. And I remeber an interview in late 90s where Padraig Joyce talked about what a great defender Darren Fay was on those international rules matchs. He praised Fay greatly after Fay was one of the standout performers for Ireland in international rules in late 90s. Even Auzzie rules players struggled on Fay. Your comments about sending to the shadows are uncalled for. Its only proper we recognise the recognise the greatness of past players like Fay and Joyce. Fay is one greatest full backs ever and Joyce is one of the greatest forwards ever..I recognise the greatnesd of both players. I dont believe in degrading great players from any county from the past. Its uncalled for.

Fay said he was roasted because he believed this . Any players scoring 2 points from play marked by Fay was roasting him. Because in 11 years only 2 players scored two points from play marked by Darren Fay. Any other defender who was marking Padraig Joyce would have been delighted with keeping him to points from play. But when you are greatest full back of your generation and one of the greatest full backs of a time when someone scores two points from play off you, and this only happens twice in your career, of course your going to be disappointed with the performance.

Darren Fay felt he was roasted because he had higher standards then others, his standards were extraordinary. If a player scored 2 point from play off him , he couldnt leave the house after. Because it only happen twice in 11 years any player scored more then 1 point from play on Fay. Thats incredible stat from incredible defender.

Joyce scored 5 points from play in that game. No player scored 5 points or 4 points or 3 points from play in the championship v Fay from 1996 to 2007. Only two players scored 2 points from v Fay in the championship in those years. Joyce was scoreless in the first half. He only scored two points in the game v Fay. You can say he would have scored 4 or 5 from play on Fay. But he didnt. And thats just that. He scored 2 points at tbe start of the second half. It was on Reilly heran riot. Thats what happenned. You can say this or that. But that what happened.

Darren Fay a coward. WHAT? . I saw Darren Fay play in over 50 championship matchs for Meath.. Fay was an incredible defender. Brave , determined, passionate, pacey , strong as ox , fearless, the heart of a lion. A general of men, a warrior who fought for every ball like it was his last. An unbelieveable defender. A man who defended like his life depended on it. Fay was a humble man. But if Paola Maldini was a gaelic defender he would have been Darren Fay. If Van Diryk or Paul McGrath was a gaelic football defender he would have been Darren Fay. Darren Fay is one of the greatest defenders of the last 40 years , one of the greatest full backs ever and at the age of 20 he led Meath to Sam Maguire. That man had more courage and more determination then you could imagine. I can admit Joyce is one of the greatest forwards. Its a terrible pity you couldnt admit how great player Fay was. If you dont understand the greatness of Darren Fay your missing out. Your missing out on what real great player Fay. A gaint of full backs. A great great man.

There also goes the story about the Meath bus driver who found the Meath water bottles on the bus, he went in after the Meath team, a Croke Park official sent him to the wrong dressing room as the teams had gone out to watch the minor match. Galway players drank the bottles at half time, imagine if Sean Boylan had concocted an energy drink but the opposition got it.... ah probably just a story but it makes you wonder!! What? Driver drinks in Galway dressing room. And show me the evidence this happenned. Actual evidence this happened. Yes and Fairys and goblins were also drinking bottle in the dressing room also. Joyce would have scored 16 or 17 points. Did Joyce ever score 16 or 17 points in the championship..As any player ever scored 16 or 17 points in the championship in a big game in Croker. Its like your saying Joyce would have scored a million points or thousand points or ten thousand points. He didnt. He scored 2 on Fay. Thats it. Fay kept him scoreless in the first half. He caused Fay problems becaude Joyce is one tbe gteatest forwards of all time. Joyce had a touch of genius. Joyce was a great great great player. I have no problem saying that. I believe in honouring our great players from the past.

If you want to go into records, Galways record in last 50 years is poor for county Galway size and stauture. Tbe greatness of Galway football is from 1930 to 1966 with 7 All Irelands. Galway were a superpower back then . Since 1966 Galway record is very patchy

In last 50 years Meath, Kerry, Cork, Tyrone, Offaly, Down, Dublin have all won more All.Irelands then Galway. You take away the glory years of 98 to 01 its very patchy. Galway didnt win a champiomship match in Croker in 14 years from 1984 to 1998. Galway didnt win a championship match in Croker in 17 years from 2001 to 2018 when they beat kerry for the first time in the championship in over 50 years. Galway havent beaten Dublin in championship in over 90 years. Mayo have beaten some best team in the country outside Connacht in last 15 years. Mayo have beaten Kerry , Dublin twice, Tyrone, Donegal, Cork. So many of them were All Ireland winners. Galway have only beaten 4 of the best teams in the country outside Connacht in last 50 years eg Armagh 01, Meath 01, kildare 98 and Kerry 2018. Those Armagh , Meath teams won Sam and kildare and kerry teams reached the final. Mayo have beaten All Ireland champions and the best teams in the country in the year they beat them.many times in the last 15 years outside Connacht. Outside Connacht Galways record is very patchy v top teams, v All Ireland winners, v best teams in the country with only 4 wins v such opposiition since 1966. Galways greatness was in the 40s 50s and 60s. All time great players all.time great teams..With exception of 1998 to 01. Galways record in last 50 years is very patchy.

This is not something I enjoy saying. Because Galway is one our great counties, a great gaa county.GAA needs a strong galway. I hope we see a strong Galway in years to come. Like any proper Gael we all want to see a strong Galway. I am a fan of Galway hurling players like Joe Cooney, Brendan Lynskey, Joe Rabbitee, Damien Hayes, Peter Finnerty and of course the great Joe Canning. 87 88 Galway team is one of my favourite gaa teams . I feel over the years the hurlers in Galway got allot of criticism, people said they should have won more All Ireland. But they were always contenders, the football team record was much more patchier and seemed to get very little criticism or attention. I could be wrong with the last point. But I just felt that.

Imagine today a full back winning an All star at age of 20 and playing under 21 football in the same year.

Darren Fay was heroic, brave, passionate, determined, a born leader of men, a warrior , an incredibly skilful defender, he had pace, he was great reader of the game. And just regards Galway have been brillant in the league so far and I tipped them to win the league here on this forum.in Jan. Meaths league has been very poor. Galway will be huge favourites v Meath. But Galway have a dreadful record in Navan. Galway havent beaten Meath Navan in nearly 40 years. Meath have won their last 8 games in a row in Navan v Galway in league and championship. In the last 5 meeting between the counties in league and championship , Meath have lost once in their last 5 games v Galway. Galway will be hot favs to win and deservedly so but Navan is a bogey ground for Galway. So if Galway beat Meath it could be sign for the last Galway beat Meath in Navan was in 1981 , nearly 40 years, which is the last year Galway won div 1 league title. Galway have only won one div 1 league title in the last 55 years.

Thanks Katser your a gentleman. This is not about taking anything away from Joyce. Joyces performance was one of the greatest ever in the final. He is one of the greatest Galway footballers ever in the top 5 in my view along with Sean Purcell, Mattie McDonagh, Enda Colleran and Michael Donnellan. He is a legend and all time great player. That Galway team 98 to 01 was an outstanding team with great forwards eg Joyce, Donnellan, Savage, Fallon, Clancey and Finnegan. Finnegan was very underated forward, a classy player. But Fallon was the man. He made Galway tick. Ja Fallon was a great player. And Donnellan.was such an excitihng talent. Between 1996 to 1999 Trevor Giles and Michael Donnellan were the two best footballers in Ireland . Giles won footballer of the year in 96 and 99 and Donnellan in 98. Galway had Kevin Walsh at midfield who was a proper powerhouse and great defenders like Gary Walsh, Kieran Fitzgerald, Tomas Mannion, Declan Meehan and Sean Og De Paor. Sean Og De Paor was one the great modern wing backs. And Declan Meehan was outstanding in the final v Meath. His goal v kerry in 00 was class. Its pity Meath kerry and Galway didnt meet in 96 , 97, 98, 99 and 00 . I know you met kerry in 00. But if there was a back door there would have been great games.
Both counties have struggled since 01. You guys have improved in last 4 years. Galway have class forwards and Joyce is an impressive individual. If Galway where to win Sam in next few years it would great for the game.

It would be just fair really if supporters would recognise Joyce didnt score 10 points on Fay , it was actaully 5 points on Fay and Joyce scored 2 points from play on Fay anf it was on Mark Reilly that Joyce ran riot."
are Meath fans not disappointed in Fay for taking it upon himself to switch off Joyce? you could maybe understand if it was at the start of the game and he could have felt off the pace and switched but by sounds of it he had a good first half on Joyce and then first sign of trouble Fay switches off him..in a a dual like that, one turnover by the defender or a score by the forward can swing the momentum back in there favor, so sounds like panic set in for Fay.

Also when you say about his record over the years of only letting his man score 2/3 points, how many of these games was he marking the forward for the full game? how many other times did he just decide to switch himself. would he lose a bit of trust from his manager when hes making decisions like that and he there best defender

these are genuine questions, not trying to have a go or anything, only hearing this for the first time. I would say id nearly have more respect for Fay if he had stayed on Joyce and battled away

Replying To Furlong1949:  "Darren Fay retired in 2008.

A great great man."
Maybe take a deep breath and actually read what I wrote.

1) I never said he was a coward. I said he took the corwards way out. He was asked by management to mark Joyce. He made the decision to take himself out of the firing line and not mark Joyce without consulatation from management.

2) In my last paragraph I said he was one of the best full backs of his generation.

3) If Darren Fay decided to remove himself from marking a player after he had scored two points on him it would be hard for any forward to score more than two points between the period of 1996-2007.

4) Point three was a joke.

I've no idea why you are defending his performance in the 2001 final when the biggest critic of it was the man himself.

Replying To mhunicean_abu:  "Wasn't he suspended for the 1997 Leinster final v Offally?? shows how much he was missed"
Yes he was. And Offaly ran riot scoring goal after goal running up the heart of the Meath defence. Roy Malohe the Offaly full forward ran riot in Fays absence..Still saying that Offaly had two class corner forwards Vinny Claffey and Peter Brady and they did win div 1 league title for the first time ever following spring. .It was a great game, Meath made a comeback in the second half. But the damage was done in first half. But it was a great leinster final, a great year in leinster. Meath v Dublin had cracking game in first round. Then Meath had 3 game saga v kildare. 2nd. game according to Michael Muiritigh said it was one of the greatest games ever played in Croke Park. And then a great final. 50000 plus at every match. Great games , great contests , 4 of the best teams in the country in leinster at the time.

Replying To Furlong1949:  "Thanks Katser your a gentleman.
If Galway where to win Sam in next few years it would great for the game."
Your spot on Furlong and your facts are 100% true, nothing you've said is a lie.
Keep her lit!!!

Like a few have others have commented if Joyce had his shooting boots in the first half he'd have kicked 15 points, he kicked a load of wides during the opening 35. He gave Fay the run around for the whole match and Fay decided to take himself off Joyce after about 15 minutes off the second half as he couldn't cope with him, the goal Declan Meehan should have scored was because of Joyce dancing round Fay and a couple of the frees originated in Joyce leaving Fay for in his wake. Fay like so many of his team mates that day was so off the pace.
