I see a number of high-profile players not committing to the county for the 2020 championship season for one thing or another but looks like the majority of them seemed to be going travelling and I cannot help myself think is this because of the tier 2 championship? eyesinshy16 (Leitrim) - Posts: 4 - 23/12/2019 13:23:56 2255975 Link 0 |
I'd say you'll have two sets of players those who see very little in committing to a winter's training programme and make plans now to drop out pre Christmas. However my guess is we haven't seen drop out rates yet; most players will use the inter county set up to get themselves into peak fitness for the summer, play the league and when their county is beaten in their province they'll be in a perfect position to grab big pay days in London and Amercia completly bypassing this secondary competition.

A Tier 2 championship wouldn't be a bad idea if it had a good structure. I would just link the League to the Championship. Reduce the League to three divisions. Top 16 teams (or 15 + Tier 2 champions) qualify for the All-Ireland.

We wont see the real drop out til after the provincials if the Tommy Murphy is anything to go by Breezy (Limerick) - Posts: 1236 - 23/12/2019 16:22:40 2255998 Link 0 |
The current system is not fit for purpose and needs rectifying. It's worth trying the 2 tier alternative. I don't think there are as many players against it as people seem to think. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 2148 - 23/12/2019 17:08:23 2256011 Link 0 |
I think the tier 2 championship is just coinciding with lads realising there's more to life and their youth than football. A lot of it is the social era and phones and such.. a small part might be tier 2 but if I was from Leitrim, it wouldn't be missing out on winning Sam that stops me from going travelling. The definition of insanity they say is doing the same thing over & over & then expecting a different result. moc.dna (Galway) - Posts: 1212 - 23/12/2019 19:42:45 2256030 Link 3 |
I also like League + Championship merger. - Divisions 1A & 1B (equally ranked, 2x11) and - Divisions 2 (1×12) - 10 match Div 1 regular season (11 in Div 2). - Div 2 top 2 to Tier 2 Final, both are promoted, and both to 16-team KO Tier 1. - Div 2 next 4 (3rd to 6th) to Promotion SFs, winner is 3rd promoted team, and advances to KO Tier 1. - Div 1A & 1B top 6 and best 7th to KO Tier 1. - KO seeding (and reseeded each round) based on regular season record (div 1, seeds 1 to 13), tier 2 champ (14), tier 2 finalist (15) and Playoff Champ (16). - In the QF Playoff and QF rounds, best seed hosts worst, 2nd best hosts 2nd worst etc. - SFs at neutral Prov venues (best seed plays 4th). - Croke Park Final. - Div 1, 3 down (both 11ths and worst 10th). omahant (USA) - Posts: 2581 - 25/12/2019 20:08:56 2256138 Link 0 |
