Despite the fact that they are in the minority. Some of the best that have ever played have/had the citoge style. I would like to see what names make the list. The criteria to make it are an AI medal or an AS and it's not restricted to the McCarty Cup counties. I'll stick with my own county. Both are right handed Hurlers. A left handed Hurler is someone who holds the hurl left hand on top 890202 (Wexford) - Posts: 1278 - 21/11/2019 12:05:57 2250650 Link 0 |
How many guys hold the hurley left handed and prefer striking off their left side. An awful lot of players who are left handed, favour striking up and under off their right. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 1898 - 21/11/2019 12:13:26 2250651 Link 0 |

What do we call my favourite modern day hurler...big Walter wally Walsh? He holds the top of the hurl with his Left hand when striking but also uses the Left hand to catch the ball!! Aidan Fogerty from KK hurled the same way. Oh ...hate to admit it but G. Kirby was the same in mid 90's. katser (Galway) - Posts: 2192 - 21/11/2019 13:12:59 2250669 Link 2 |

John O' Brien and Benny Dunne.

for whatever reason left handed hurlers seem more difficult to block or hook than right handed hurlers. Tj Reid is the perfect example, not taking away from his genius of course. ZUL10 (Clare) - Posts: 693 - 21/11/2019 17:20:43 2250727 Link 1 |

Top best lefties I had the pleasure of watching in recent years. hopballref (Galway) - Posts: 377 - 21/11/2019 19:22:29 2250752 Link 1 |
I've marked Club Hurlers in my time with that unorthodox style and apart from being awkward, they tend to be one sided and really dislike striking the ball off their Left Side!

Offaly had a few very accomplished "lefties" in the 80s and 90s, such as Damien Martin, Martin Hanemy and Johnny Flaherty, but I'd go back even further to recall the most stylish and skillful left-handed hurler I've ever seen - the great Jimmy Doyle of Tipperary. Another that comes to mind is Frank Cummins of Kilkenny - maybe not the most stylish but certainly one of the top midfielders of the past 50 years. midlands (Westmeath) - Posts: 541 - 21/11/2019 20:13:02 2250759 Link 1 |
Thanks for all the names there are great hurlers mentioned as good as any of their right handed counterparts. Coopers_Helmet (Tipperary) - Posts: 154 - 22/11/2019 12:37:13 2250850 Link 0 |
There's some truth in it. I find it hard to remember Pat Fox or Lar Corbett getting hooked or blocked down.

First that came to my mind were Paul Codd and Niall Gilligan Breffni40 (Cavan) - Posts: 12115 - 22/11/2019 13:57:48 2250869 Link 2 |
Some of left handed hurlers play that way and aren't truly left handed. There was a picture on HS of TJ Reid signing an autograph after a match and he was using his right hand. I think Lar Corbett is the same. Coopers_Helmet (Tipperary) - Posts: 154 - 22/11/2019 14:19:25 2250875 Link 0 |
