Penalties

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Cracking weekend in the Ulster club football this week with Clontibert beating Cross by a point, both Junior Semi-Finals going to extra time one ended there Blackhill (Mon) defeating Killykere (Cav) and the other Tyrone's Rock beaten by Donegals Buncrana in Penalties.

Also Derrygonnelly (Fer) defeating Trillick (Tyr) also in penalties in what was a delightful game of football. Many people have taken to twitter and facebook to express their unsatisfaction with the concept of a GAA game to be decided in Penalties describing it Cruel way to end a GAA game

Personnally, I dont see whats wrong with penalties, it is as much part of our game as it is in soccer. Both teams have fought for 80mins some players dead on their feet.

Do you go on for another period of 2x5min halves until we have a winner or go home and do it all again in a replay. There was no reason replays could have been played this weekend given the 2 week gap between quarters and semis.

All too often games do go to replays. Should be more games decided on the day. Even find rules as tie breakers like team with least yellows/reds or team with more goals as winner as a tiebreak.

Re the Trillick v Derrygonnelly game, it was a game where a draw on the day would have been the fairest result. Neither team deserved to win it on the day. Derrygonnelly did well to bring it back from the dead to level it (twice), but they never did more than that in actual playing time. Equally, while Trillick built up leads in normal and extra time with minutes left, they then gave away some soft frees to blow the lead each time. Draw would have been the most accurate reflection of the game. Given a free weekend next weekend, it would have been more sensible to let them have another crack at it. If they were still level in a replay, then, at that stage, fair enough, go to penalties. That'd be my preference - draw + extra-time, replay +extra time, penalties.

Next point wins is fine for GAA after 1 period of extra time.

My only issue with next score wins is that the referee could throw the ball in, one team could win possession score a point any it be over in 30 seconds. Least with penalties both teams have a fair opportunity. I'd rather go out to penalties than golden score

Have 2 points to win? I think there's an answer there somewhere. I think playing football over hitting penalties would be preferable.

Next score wins would be a dreadful way to end a game, there's a reason it was hated in soccer.

You can't have next score wins in a sport where the wind can be such a huge factor in the game. Some games would then be virtually decided on who won the toss.

Or golden goal?

The only problem with 'next score the winner' is if one team has a bit of a wind behind them.

Personally I think there should just be more extra time.

If a game ends level after normal time go to ET, but straight way make it 5 mins each half, if still level go for another 5 mins each half, and so on.

The vast majority of games would be settled after the first 5x2 mins and 99% would be settled after the second 5x2mins.

If it needs a third period so be it, by decreasing the first period of ET by 10 mins 3 periods of ET would be the same as 2 periods of ET currently. And it increases the amount of times the game can be won.

Penalties, thought exciting, are a hollow way to win a Championship game imo.

Penalties are fine. What's wrong with them? Some people just find a problem for every solution!

It was hated in soccer because teams were afraid of losing and just defended.

Or think there are better ways of doing something. If people were always of the attitude, "sure it's grand, nothing would ever improve ".

Penalties shoot outs are new to GAA and they're not even universally used.

Now would be the right time to decide what's best.

I'd have thought decoding the game with Gaelic Football or Hurling as much as possible would be desirable.

Yeah that works too, although there will sometime be a games that go to a 4th extra time. It wouldn't be ideal for a mid week game.

I get what you're saying but mid week Champo games tend to be 2nd replays. If we had extended ET until someone wins in the 1st replay the mid week replay wouldn't happen.

Obviously there would still be exceptions but I feel they'd be quite rare.

For me only finals should go to replayed the 1st day after normal time. All other games should go straight to rolling ET until they produce a winner.

Obviously if we had a better structured calendar we'd have more space and time that this really wouldn't be an issue!

I totally agree with you that Championship games should be decided by football/hurling not a contrived game of penos.

It was hated because it was seen as unfair, anticlimatic, and could favour one team if there was a strong wind.

It'd be even worse in football or especially hurling. If my team had a strong wind behind them and the game went to next score wins, I'd pull all 15 of my players into my half of the field and just start taking shots from distance.

Fair points. You've convinced me Its not a good idea.

Mes Amis's solution is much better to me than penalties.
