Replying To InishowenMan:  "Was a good game. Slaughtneil started brightly but when Ballyhale got settled into the game they hurled well. From what I seen Slaughtneil got away with more than Ballyhale did! Reid exceptional from the dead ball as expected. Slaughtneil stayed in until the end and fought well but I had a feeling Ballyhale had another gear in them when needed."
Not sure what you were watching. Ballyhale won the yellow card contest very easily- Was it 6 v 0 so I would say they got away with more. Ballyhale are a very good side, a team of county players and will be very difficult to beat in the final.

Replying To Joxer:  "Exactly. So much for population and resources. It just goes to show that you get the right group of players together, right coaching staff, galvanise them and great things happen. I thought they were superb today. Boden looked leggy and if you insist upon throwing almost all of your players into your own half when you're 5 points down with as many minutes left while transitioning as slowly as Boden did, then you don't deserve anything from the game. Hope Kilcoo go on to win it now."
so, when a rural club or another County other than Dublin wins an all-ireland every so often, then we should rejoice in the fact that they have overcome the mighty, and upset the odds, rather than actually asking ourselves why we have such inequality...lets all get our begging bowls out and give thanks to the masters in Dublin for allowing the rest of us some success...i have heard it all now!

Mcgrath was an embarrassment- obviously sent out to put big Cody off his game, no intention of hurling against him so let's drag him down a level- not to mention breaking a players stick in half and throwing Another two hurls off the pitch which he got booked for, their manager couldn't control his emotions either, twice trying to put T.J off his free taking in sight of everyone in the stand, I understand some teams have a whatever it takes to win attitude but this won't work on the big stage-was a pity too because without being set up like this the slaughneil team can hurl a bit too.
Role on the final..."
Poor comment jab lift take your Ballyhale tinted glasses off and give credit were its due - Slaughtneil were immense today and but for a few dodgy decisions second half could well have got over the line. Great to see an Ulster hurling team play so well and to hell with the begrudgery.

And do you think they were deserved?
Plus the theatricals from Slaughtneil players. One example when TJ Reid got booked and deservedly so for leaving his Hurley out! But the rolling about on the ground of the player evolved was embarrassing. Another when one got a slight knock and straight away was down pulling his helmet off looking for attention. Whither or not they were trying to get players booked or sent off I can't say. I have no alliance with either team but tend to agree with Jab.lifts observations.

Replying To suckvalleypaddy:  "Congrats to Boras. well deserved and hope ye win final. St. Thomas have a problem on the sideline, allowing opposition to use a sweeper when trailing is unforgivable. Self-inflicted defeat in some ways with poor shot options losing long balls aimlessly to seven defenders."
I thought so too. Very naive. Also I think the ref let boris away with a lot of stuff. David Burke got dogs abuse in the first half and in the second boris got a few dodgy decisions. Twice a boris defender touched the ball on the ground in front of the goat and got away with it.
But look about 15 wides for st thomas tells it's own tale. Boris had more fight and fought harder for their win. Boris have lots to do for the final, I think they have 10 pts to make upon ballyhale.

A Tipp man is a bit close to KK for my liking and doubt they would have had an Antrim ref in charge today - despite proximity to Newry.

Derry and Antrim are in the same province. Tipperary is in Munster, Kilkenny in Leinster. You obviously have no idea of the intense rivalry between Tipp and Kilkenny. The first thing I thought when I saw the fixture was that the ref was from Tipp, couldn't they have picked another ref from a different county. At the end of the day, are you suggesting Ballyhale won because of the ref?

The Ballyhale full forward took 8-10 steps for both goals and their CB was extremely lucky to see out the full match. TJ Reid got 10 points from frees some of which I would call very soft ones. The norm (in both codes) by Refs result in the stronger team /counties getting most of the close calls. I have no alliance either just my observations.

No tinted glasses on today SouthCounty, I've seen Slaughtneil a fair few times over the last number of years as a player and know their behaviour very well, trash talk is a big part of their game to get under the opposition's skin, they actually played well against Dunloy in the Ulster Final when they simply let themselves do a bit of hurling but today was a totally different game, they seemed to have to revert to old methods and tactics(bully's with hurls is what their manager tried to say they weren't) some players were obviously well briefed on how to mark the opposite player using a brand of football defending and checking, well sorry you ain't gonna rough up a team with the experience of Ballyhale, imagine if they had let the shackles off as they did in the last 10 what might have been !!!!!!
Felt the shamrocks could have responded when the needed too, done enough to get over the line on a sticky January pitch in newry - Croker will be a different sod and a vast amount of room for both teams to play in.....

As Shefflin said they will let their hurling do the talking and they did- a few Ballyhale players could've got caught up in the attention they received but they kept their cool and continued to hurl....now that's pure class

What I said was I don't think a ref should be chosen from either the same Province or a neighbouring County (regardless of how much perceived hatred/admiration there is between said Counties) in my opinion when there are plenty of good refs from beyond both could be used. Thought same when Gough took two of the games in the latter stages of the AI involving Dublin and McQuillan getting the Tyrone game against the Dubs. They managed to have a ref from a 3rd Province in the rest at the same stages as far as I remember so they obviously put some thought in that regards when appointing.

No denying that the 2 best teams are in the hurling final. Imo the standard of senior club hurling in Galway has been very ordinary over the last few years (really since Portumna were in their pomp) so not at all surprised that St Thomas's came up short. They were largely unimpressive in the county campaign and have had the look of a side that were past their best so for me this game was going to be decided on how good Borrisoleigh were and they proved themselves to be more than good enough.

In the other game I was really pleasantly surprised at the quality and hurling skill of Slaughtneil. It was tough hurling and might have been at the edge at times but really was a very good match and Snaughtneil deserve every credit. I imagine Ballyhale will have been delighted with the tough game they got and it sets them up nicely for 2 weeks time.
I expect Ballyhale will win the final but Borris have the ability and to push them all the the way and it has the makings of a great game.

Finally, I thought both referees had very good games. The Tipp official is probably the best hurling referee in the country right now.

Replying To UtahBlaine:  "Well you would think an experienced referee like Fergal Horgan would have cottoned on to Colin Fenelly at this stage .Regularly overcarries the ball into contact ,shakes his head about a little and is invariably awarded a free .Serial offender for a number of years with club and county and is rarely pulled on it. Still a tremendous player otherwise"
He usually has 3 or 4 defenders that he's dragging with him. Like R. Power, one of the most fouled forwards in the game. He did play the ball in one instance that it looked like he over carried(was very difficult to see), but otherwise I don't know how he even gets a shot away w/the mauling he constantly receives. Playing the ball w/one guy holding your hurl, another your spare arm & one or two hanging off his back. Might be part of the reason refs let it go much of the time.

All you needed to do is keep your eyes open and watch what went on during the match- remove the tinted glasses . We can all read a post so you do not need for the bold print!!

Where would you like the referee to be from ?
A rivalry is one thing but you are suggesting he would favour an opponent of Kilkenny. What are you basing that accusation on. Ye won the game and go way and enjoy it and stop your ail rubbish. You're a fierce defensive minded individual.

Watched both the hurling matches yesterday and Kilcoo v Ballyboden on saturday.
Very hard to beat the passion and doggedness of the club matches this time of year.

Firstly Slaughtneill are just a fantastic club, how a tiny rural club have kept coming back in both codes the last few years is unreal. People might give out about the sledging or whatever but by god a lot of bigger clubs and counties could learn from them, Ballyhale are the best team in Ireland and Hurling royalty but Slaughtneill never took a backwards step and went toe to toe with them for the hour. Ultimately though Ballyhale answered every question that was asked of them and showed why they are all ireland champions. They are also a fantastic club and were deserved winners.

St Thomas v Borris-Ileigh was another entertaining game. The Galway men will rue a lot of wides but when the game was in the melting pot in the last 15 Borris took charge. Brendan Maher is a colossus of a man. Looking forward to the final, Ballyhale will be rightly favourites but KK v Tipp anything can happen, I'm sure Borris will give them their fill of it.

Lastly Boden v Kilcoo was brilliant. A lot of doom and gloom about football at the minute but when you see games at this time of year like saturdays where lads are emptying themselves and throwing there bodies on the line with complete abandon it makes you realise we have a great game when played right.
Some posters are trying to make out that it wasnt a David v Goliath match-up because Mickey Moran isnt at Kilcoo for the good of his health, Im sorry but no matter what way you spin it this was another victory for David.
Kilcoo is as rural a village as you could find with a tiny population with a team made up of brothers, up against a club with one of the largest playing numbers in Ireland. Just because they can afford a good manager doesnt take away from what they have done at all.
This is not a slight on Ballyboden its not their fault and im sure every club would love to have the numbers and resources they have.
Corofin will be rightly favourites and they play gaelic football at its absoloute best, but the men from The Mournes will have no fear and leave nothing in the dressing room.
Cant wait for both finals.
