Perhaps in the interests of transparency Paul Flynn might release details of his salary after all as GAA members we are helping fund the GPA partly. Also Sport Ireland who fund a large percentage of GPA funds could ask for salaries to be published. We have seen within the FAI what happens when these matters are hidden & when a small group have autocratic control over matters. Sport Ireland is public money & as both taxpayers & GAA members we should be entitled to know what the top salaries are in both the GPA & the GAA & have them published. Most GAA members are unaware that the Association pays the salary of the President if he takes leave from his occupation & whatever that salary is. A number of years ago a particular President's salary from his occupation was released through FOI & it shocked many as it was nearly ten times the average industrial salary at the time in an organisation that was exposed afterwards on an RTE expose. Most people would be shocked if they knew the actual facts, in particular at the top of the GAA. The big red flag for GAA members was when Congress which contains all the top levels of the Association voted against a motion on transparency & leading officials canvassed counties for the motion to be defeated. What was there to hide ? Shane Ross might think the FAI is a mess & devious, wait till the hard questions are asked within the GAA.

Correct. Make no mistake, when you introduce pay for play it changes everything. In theory, if the GPA got a % of gate receipts and they were divided equally amongst all their members regardless of county, profile, success etc. I wouldn't be too opposed. But then the big boys would kick up. "Why should Longford players get the same money as us when we're pulling in crowds of 40/50/60 thousand and are on Sky 5 times during the summer?" And believe me, that will happen. ballydalane (Kilkenny) - Posts: 1246 - 11/08/2019 10:43:46 2223852 Link 2 |
We've already seen it over the past 6 or 7 years. Guys transferring from down the country to Dublin clubs as they move up to Dublin for work. But yet very few of these guys move to clubs at intermediate level or lower, which would be the case if it was just moving for the sake of work. Further, some clubs are actively finding work for country players to entice them to move to Dublin. I've heard of one example where a country player was given a job in a Dublin club's bar to get him to move to Dublin: 40k a year for about 20 hours work a week as a barman. Nice work if you can get it. I think to be fair, the mask occasionally slips with the GPA. Once there was a formal agreement across all county teams on expenses and conditions (gear, meals and the likes), there was little need for the GPA. Their agenda has been pay-for-play for years. Looking for gate receipts now. It's just wrong. The GAA is an amateur organisation. It is at the core of what makes the GAA great and why it has been so strong. Show me a current intercounty player who's unemployed at present. There are perks with being on a county panel, whether that's getting your college paid for or getting handed a nice job, getting promotions over colleagues who are better qualified, whatever. The thing that probably annoys me most about the GPA is all you ever hear from them is about how hard it is to be a county player, the sacrifice, the slog. Sure just stand aside and let someone else do it if it's that bad lads. icehonesty (Wexford) - Posts: 2550 - 11/08/2019 11:57:51 2223894 Link 5 |
I think the first thing we need to do is have a serious look at the GPA accounts. Obviously if we were to accept that the players were to get a share of the gate IE professionalsm we would need a transparent method of doing so. There are rumours perhaps true or perhaps false of the level of the expenses in the GPA. I would imagine Flynn would want to clear this up rapidly jobber (Westmeath) - Posts: 1445 - 12/08/2019 01:05:45 2224406 Link 1 |
When the GPA won't even publish salary breakdowns it's unlikely Flynn will publish expenses. The denigration of Colm O Rourke by the GPA for challenging them was disgraceful. Colm O Rourke is a former inter county player like themselves but his work at schools level & club level gives him a greater insight to the whole Association compared to the contribution of some of those who denigrate him. The cosy relationship between the GPA & the GAA hierarchy is not good for the GAA & has gone the road of elitism & now on the road to semi pro. In contrast club players are second class members. How long before the GPA instruct their members not to fulfil some fixtures unless they get a slice of gate receipts ? moc.dna (Galway) - Posts: 1212 - 12/08/2019 19:46:19 2224859 Link 1 |
We have seen how professionalism has killed off rugby clubs. The GAA is already halfway down that road. Something needs to be done to halt the slide. Clubs motions get shot down at Congress every year. No club matches played for huge sections of the year. Croke Park more interested in marketing and profit than in having plenty of games for all. GPA wanting gate money now. This is a slide which must be stopped. icehonesty (Wexford) - Posts: 2550 - 13/08/2019 07:39:40 2224994 Link 1 |
Ya! Most of the people on here would begrudge the players getting a cent for what they put on but are fine with the suits getting it and taking in money for corporate boxes. The people in those boxes with their backs to the play while your neighbour down the road can not get a ticket or bring his son to the game, who is down in the field playing every night. Begrudary alive and well. Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 2655 - 13/08/2019 19:03:04 2225245 Link 0 |
Read back on the posts Canuck. I don't think any of us are fine with suits getting it and taking money for corporate boxes. If the GPA start getting a cut of gate receipts they'll want even more of those suits in the corporate boxes! A couple of posters have asked for transparency on what these suits are paid.

Icehonesry if the Gaa were smart they would be pro active come up with a system that would compensate inter county players and to hell with the GPA. People on here saying the players should step down if they don't want to do it. That is a phoney wish as no one on here wants the best players to do that and would complain about the standard. Do we remember Cork when the top players stood down? I say as system because most of the pro sports would not what we want for ours. However common sense or head in the sand would tell us what is going on with demand can not be sustained. Either mandate twice a week county training or some form of payment for this 7 day a week requirement. The bottom line is there is plenty of money for a chosen few. Chris Barrett did an interview in the Irish Times recently and had a much better suggestion. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1105 - 14/08/2019 06:53:48 2225390 Link 1 |
